Chapter 1
Crosgrove
set the last ward in place and stepped back to admire his latest prize.
A twelfth century grimoire recently recovered and believed to be fae in
origin. It had cost him a fortune… several fortunes to be exact.. but
it had been worth it. It was in incredible condition, very well
preserved, its protective magic’s still intact after all these
centuries.
Of course, that meant no one had been able to open it to discover if it really was fae in origin.. but even so…
Crosgrove
sighed, smiling as he looked at the display case housing his newest and
potentially greatest treasure. “Breathtaking.. absolutely
breathtaking..” he said softly.
“Indeed… I should thank you for retrieving it for me.. saved me a great deal of trouble, I assure you…”
Crosgrove
spun in shock at the voice, his eyes going wide as he instinctively
took a step back. “Who are you?! What are you doing here…how did you
get past the wards...!?”
A
soft chuckle from the far side of room and a tall man dressed
completely in black stepped forward, his pale skin almost glowed
against the dark clothing, along with the curtain of hair that hung
about him, both a pale gold that somehow had a silver cast to it. Idly
running a gloved finger along a book case , he walked casually closer,
his head tipped to the side as if reading the titles, his hair parting
to reveal the pointed ears. “Who I am is not important… as for your
wards… please..” another soft icy chuckle sounded. “You insult me. And
you know exactly what I’m doing here…I’ve come for my book…”
Crosgrove
swallowed nervously, his eyes shifting to the grimoire before snapping
back to his ‘guest’. “Yours? So it’s true….? It IS fae…?” he asked, his
voice barely a whisper. “I swear.. I had no idea it was stolen, the
paperwork seemed..”
The
dark man waved a hand, cutting him off as he turned a cold smile to
him. “It wasn’t stolen, my dear fellow.. well, actually I suppose it
was at some point, otherwise it would never have found it’s way here…
but not from myself.”
Crosgrove
shifted nervously, sweat beginning to bead on his forehead as he became
all too aware of his danger. Alone in a room full of valuable artifacts
and books, surrounded by magic that he couldn’t use without damaging
the artifacts themselves…”But.. you just said…”
An
amused smirk accompanied by a soft chuckle, neither of which reached
those cold, frightening eyes. “Said it was mine? It is.. you’re going
to give it to me. Don’t dawdle now, Crosgrove… I’m a busy man…”
Crosgrove
hesitated, then tried to run for the anteroom where he had a gun in his
desk.. for all the good it would do against one of the fae.
There
was a soft sigh from behind him. ‘Crosgrove.. you disappoint me… “ The
soft sound of footsteps following him as he reached the door and
fumbled with the knob which refused to turn. “Do you really think you
can escape me? How sad… one would think a man of your learning would
know better…”
Crosgrove
gave a whimper as the voice was suddenly behind him and he spun,
pressing himself against the door. “Take it.. take all of them… just
please…”
“Please?”
he asked, his voice coldly amused as he regarded the cowering mortal
before him. “Please what? Don’t kill you? Really, Mr. Crosgrove… what
kind of a man do you take me for?”
Crosgrove swallowed nervously. ”You mean.. you mean you aren’t going to .. kill me?” he asked hopefully.
The
man laughed softly and Crosgrove felt his insides ice over with renewed
fear and dread at the sound. “Don’t be stupid.. of course I’m going to
kill you. I merely found it hard to believe you
actually thought I might be persuaded to let you live. Now…” he smiled
“.. you did just say I could have it all..” he glanced around the room
with a slightly bored look. “Very generous of you… perhaps I might find
an additional item or two of interest.. One never knows after all.” The
dark eyes seemed to shine with an inner light that only served to make
Crosgrove cringe more.. “So, my dear fellow…are you going to release
the wardings now, or do I have to… ‘persuade’ you…?”
** Chapter 2 **
“Another
one.” Auron said, dropping the file onto the conference table as he
took a seat. “A twelfth century grimoire that had rumors of being fae
attached to it. The original protection spells on it so strong that no
one had as yet managed to break them to actually see what it held.
Makes me wonder how they knew it was a grimoire and where the rumors of
being fae came from…”
“Ye
can tell, man.. books of magic… well.. ye can just tell.” Nate said
helpfully from his seat where he sat fiddling with a pen, flipping it
through his fingers. “No need t’ e’en open it… with some o’ them... ye
don’ e’en have t’ touch it…”
Chaos
sighed and looked at the newest folder lying in the middle of the table
on top of the others. “As for the rumors of it being fae, that could be
due to the strength or type of spell laid on it, or due to some glyph
inscribed on the cover.. or even where the book was found.” She found
herself wiggling one high heeled foot as she looked at the folder. “The
owner?”
“Dead.
Nicholas Crosgrove, age sixty three. Collector. Same as the others. He
was a minor witch, of the learned variety.” Auron said, his own eyes on
the folder as well.
“Any
books other than the grimoire taken?” A quiet voice asked and Auron
glanced across the table at his youngest son. The petite red head was
writing something in a ledger and glanced up at him, peering over the
reading glasses at him with a raised eyebrow. “Dad?”
Auron
cleared his throat. “Yes…” he said and nodded to the folder. “There’s
complete list of everything that was missing. Luckily, Mr. Crosgrove
was meticulous in his record keeping.” He said as Lex set aside the
ledger and pen and began leafing through until he found the list.
“Quite a few this time…” he said softly.
Auron
nodded. “Yes… and on a new note, there were a couple non-readable items
taken as well... seems our book worm is branching out…”
“No
doubt all are either strongly enchanted or related to the fae in some
way..” Lex said, pushing the glasses up a bit farther on his nose as he
flipped through. “I checked the lists of stolen items from the others
and they are all very rare or unique magical text or works concerning
the fae…”
“So
what d’ y’ think we’re dealin’ with? There’s been a definite sense of
fae magic at all the sites, but ifn th’ bugger’s been stealin’ stuff
linked t’ them, he could be using some enchanted item tha’s leavin’
tha’ residue… Our thinkin’ tha’ he’s fae might be wrong…” Nate said,
dropping his pen on the table. “Come on, Lexi… do th’ books he’s taken
have anythin’ useful t’ tell us?”
Lex
snorted as he pulled off his glances, setting them on the folder and
gave Nate a look. “For that I’d have to be able to read the books…
rather hard to do considering, don’t you agree?” He gave a soft,
delicate sounding snort and turned to Chaos. “As extensive as our
archives are, most of these books are so rare that I had trouble even
finding references to them existing! And there are some here that are
absolutely unique with no information on them whatsoever, except that
which the owners themselves had on file…”
“Lexine… you sound like you’re in love..” Sylvie said softly from her place beside him, making him blush.
Auron
chuckled softly before shaking his head. “I’ve back tracked all the
missing books… they came from a wide range of sources and from a wide
range of locales. None of the victims had anything in common other then
their collections of rare books. Plus they’re scattered over five
states, one all the way across the country!” He gave a tired sigh. “The
only connection I was able to make on any of them, was a small one at
best…” he said. “Several different books from various victims were
purchased over the internet from different shops in one town in Illinois.
Breakwater. Population roughly twenty five thousand. According to the
town’s website, it’s been the home, however temporary or fleeting, of a
large number of literary greats throughout history and has several
historical homes that have been turned into museums and libraries. Plus
a large number of bookstores… I’ve never seen so many bookstore
listings in one town before…”
“Now
you’ve done it.” Chaos said with a smirk, eyeing Lex. “You’ve not only
sparked someone’s intense interest, but no doubt inspired years worth
of daydreams to come…” Lex blushed, fiddling with his glasses. “I
suppose if this is our only lead, we need to check it out. It’ll give
us an opportunity to upgrade our archives a bit as well, I suppose… all
those books.. surely there are *some* we don’t have…”
Lex looked up at his mother and grinned. “I can go?!”
Auron snorted. “I don’t think that’s a good idea…”
“I think it’s a great idea.” Chaos said, giving her husband a look. “Illinois
is.. what.. almost a thousand miles? A bit more perhaps? That’s a nice
chunk of distance to put between Lex and Ravenscourt for a while.
Besides.. he can use the vacation.”
Auron
looked from his wife to his son and sighed, throwing up his hands.
“Alright.. I know when I’m beat. But if Lex is going, then so am I.”
Chaos chuckled softly. “Oh… count me in then. No way do I trust the two of you on the road alone together…”
Lex
had tuned out back when Chaos had started to argue his case. With his
mom on his side, it was a done deal. He was leaning on the table, his
chin in his hand and his glasses idly twisting from the fingers of his
other hand as he thought about an entire town dedicated to books….

** Chapter 3 **
“Contemporary Louvain
binding for John of Westphalia, of blind stamped calf over wooden
boards. Covers are paneled with double and quadruple fillets, the
center panel diapered by triple fillets with a small star at all points
of intersection, the resulting compartments containing three different
stamps.” There was a brief pause, then whoever was speaking continued
in the same bored tone. “..an oblong rectangle containing a rebusi—a
bird followed by the letters ï“veï” and a bow and arrow between four
stars, a square wyvern, and a bust of John of Westphalia in the two
most central compartments. As you can see, it has the original
headbands, however the binding is worn and somewhat defective, it’s
rebacked, and lacking clasps.” Another short pause, and Lex managed to
wander far enough down the aisle to catch site of the speaker as he
pointed to something in one of the cases. He was a short but plump man,
looking almost comical. Like some one had stuck arms, legs and a head
on a balloon and stuffed it inside a suit. He even seemed to bob
slightly as he spoke.. “ The blue pigment in the border on a1 a little
flaked, the upper blank corner of the first leaf has been repaired. As
well, there is a small wormhole in the lower blank margin of the first
thirty-three leaves ,a1-d3, not affecting the text, but there is a somewhat larger wormhole in the last sixty-four leaves , 17/5 to D12, that does affect some text.”
Lex
snorted softly, turning his attention to the case in front of him,
leaving the man to his spiel. He couldn’t understand how anyone could
sound bored talking about these treasures…
Out
of curiosity, he tried to peer around the man to see the book his was
describing. He was still droning on about its condition. “There are a
few small stains and minor marginal tears or paper flaws. Contemporary
ink markings in the New Testament for liturgical reading. Latin
annotations in some margins and on the final blank, by a late
sixteenth-century Netherlanders scholar, citing Hebrew and Greek.”
A second voice sounded softly from over Lex’s shoulder. “Biblia Latina. Venice:
Franciscus Renner, de Heilbronn, 1480. It’s from the library of Abel E.
Berland with his label. A superb and very large example, preserving
some deckle edges. It’s housed in a half red morocco clamshell case.
Absolutely exquisite piece.” Lex turned to see find a tall, slim
gentleman standing just behind and to the left of him, apparently
examining the contents of the adjacent case as he also eavesdropped. “I
find it horribly fascinating to listen to him describe
such treasures and somehow make them sound… dull. It’s like driving
past an accident scene.. You don’t want to look, but you feel compelled
to…”
Lex gave a nervous giggle. “Yus… I don’t understand how anyone could sound so bored surrounded by all this…”
The
man chuckled softly, turning to face him. He was dressed impeccably in
charcoal grey slacks and a long black overcoat, with a high collared
deep blue silk shirt. At first Lex thought the pale ash blonde hair was
cut short and slicked back, but when the man turned slightly to look
towards the dull speaker, he saw it was actually quite long, reaching
almost to his waist, but pulled back in a tight braid.
The
man turned back, smirking softly. “I find myself coming here at times
just to listen to him, my heart breaking at the butchery he does. I’d suggest filing
a complaint, but unfortunately, he can’t be fired… he owns the place…
although I’ve considered buying it just for the pleasure…” he chuckled and bowed his head slightly as he held out one hand. “I’m sorry.. Allow me to introduce myself… Faal Dominic.”
Lex
eyed the outstretched hand a moment before accepting it. “Lexine
Mordant.” He said, blushing furiously as the gentleman suddenly turned
his hand and lifted to his lips to kiss it lightly.
“Charmed. I don’t recall seeing you before… but I get the definite feeling you’re no stranger to fine literature…and I’m sure I’d remember such a striking beauty as yourself. ”
Lex blushed
even more furiously, suddenly wishing he hadn’t dressed as a girl
today. If he’d been dressed as himself, he wouldn’t have to deal with
the flirting every man seemed to feel necessary… and he probably would
never have been allowed through the doors to half the places he’d
wanted to visit… Aiyla was right in that sometimes you had to dress the
part… and when dressed the part... you had to act the part…
Through
his blush he managed to retrieve his hand. “No, I’ve only just arrived
in town… I’m traveling with my family and some friends… and no, I’m no
stranger to books…I practically grew up in a library… books are my
life..”
One
fine blonde eyebrow rose. “Really? Sounds like a wonderful childhood. I
grew up in a somewhat less then ideal setting, although my mother did
have a fabulous collection… a great deal of which she wrote herself.”
Lex
snorted. “I’d hardly call my childhood ‘wonderful’. The library was
it’s only saving grace…”he said softly as he turned away, looking back
at the shelves. What was he doing talking to this guy anyhow?
Completely unlike him… “Excuse me.. I should go. No doubt my father is
waiting for me…” he said, glancing back towards the front of the shop.
Actually, Auron and Kay were busy working on a case with the others.
Lex was only along to keep him out of trouble and away from Rowen. Lex
snorted softly remembering his mothers’ comment about it being a
vacation for him.. All the museums and rare bookstores and shows, plus
three libraries… He sighed realizing that unless the case took a number
of years, he’s never even get through one of the libraries, let alone
the museums…even though none of them were very large and almost all of
them resided in refurbished houses.
“Miss Mordant?”
Lex
turned around to find the gentleman looking at him quizzically, and
blushed, realizing he must have been speaking to him. “Sorry… mind
wandered… I really should go… too many books, too little time…” he said
with a slightly embarrassed smile. His blush
grew as Faal chuckled softly and took his hand again, once again
kissing his knuckles. What was it about this guy? Anyone else he’d say
this was some act to charm him.. but with this guy .. it felt real…
“If
you’ve only just arrived , then you haven’t had time to visit any of
the sites… I would be honored to give you the tour… we have a wonderful
literary history here…”
Lex
was sorely tempted to accept and was horrified at himself for it. After
everything he’d been through , here he was tempted to put himself in
the hands of a stranger…again. Some people never learned… sure he was
handsome, and charming.. and smelled wonderful… Lex thought, catching a
whiff of Faal’s cologne… but he could be another Rowen for all he knew…
and he certainly didn’t need to go through THAT again. “I’m sorry… “ he
said, reluctantly pulling his hand free. “I shouldn’t even be talking
to you…”
Faal
bowed his head with a sigh. “Ah, yes… how thoughtless of me.. a
beautiful young woman alone in a strange town…. But you must forgive
me. After all, how could I be expected to see such a vision and not
wish to meet her?” he slipped a hand into an inside pocket of his
jacket and withdrew a card. “Here… please accept this and if you change
your mind…don’t hesitate to call.”
He
handed her the card and bowed elaborately, smiling mischievously as he
stepped backward before turning and slipping off deeper into the store.
Lex watched him go, his stomach full of butterflies as he watched the
pale blonde braid swing across the black material of his coat as he
left.
“Excuse me, Miss.. may I help you?”
Lex
blinked and looked over to find the owner of the store looking at him
oddly. He blushed a bit more, wondering how long he’d been staring
after Faal. “Umm… yus.. that man .. the tall blonde who just left… who
was he?”
The
man blinked and leaned back slightly. “Ahh! Slim, long braid down his
back? Young looking? That would be Mr. Dominic. He’s a very good
customer of mine...” he trailed off, looking at him expectantly.
Lex
nodded slowly, then smiled shyly. “Thank you. “ he said softly before
turning to leave. He was outside on the street before he remembered he
was still clutching the card in his fingers and looked at it. “ Faal
Dominic. Rare Books & Antiquities; Private
Acquisitions .” he read softly, running a finger over the elegant
silver type setting on the deep blue and black card. He tilted the card
slightly, trying to make out what the black image over the blue was and
decided it was a bird… no.. a phoenix. A black phoenix over a field of
midnight blue…
He
glanced back at the store again, a finger on his lip as he stared
thoughtfully at the curtained windows which carefully shielded the
books within from the harmful effects of sunlight, then slipped the
card into the messenger bag he carried in lieu of a purse.
“Hey
there beautiful.” A voice called out and Lex turned to see Aiyla seated
behind the wheel of a flashy red convertibly. Saffron sat morosely in
the passengers seat. He wondered if he was sulking because she wouldn’t
let him drive.. or because he was supposed to be keeping an eye on Lex
and he’d given him the slip…
Lex
walked over to the passengers side of the car, dainty yet confident in
the heels and long skirt. Aiyla had tried to talk him into a shorter
one.. a much shorter one, but one of the thing’s he’d learned from his mother
was how to shop with pushy people and get away with just buying the
stuff you actually wanted. He owed her immensely for that. He owed her
immensely for everything. He waited by the door, until Aiyla finally
shoved Saffron.
“What?! He can get in the back!”
Aiyla
rolled her eyes and punched him I the arm as Lex rolled his eyes.
“No…’she’ can’t… be a gentleman if not a good big brother and give her
your seat.”
Saffron
turned to glare at Lex before giving a sigh and opening his door for
Lex, then hopping into the back, obviously not happy. Lex hid his smirk
as he slid onto the seat and pulled the door closed behind him.
Aiyla ran her eyes over Lex again with a smirk as he popped her sunglasses back in
place and turned her attention back to driving. “Damn, Lex… it’s just
not fair how you can wear such… bland clothes and still come out
looking sexy as hell…”
“They’re
not bland….” He said blushing and turned his gaze to the side, watching
the store recede in his mirror as Aiyla pulled away. “They’re
sophisticated and elegant…”
“Doesn’t matter if they’re ‘business casual’.. it’s still DRAG.” Saffron added glumly from his seat. “I mean, Christ, Lex…!”
“Shut up, Saffron.” They both said at the same time, neither bothering to look in his direction.
“Besides…
if Jasmine is right about the Seal, then you might as well get used to
it… soon I’ll BE a girl anyways, right? Then you’ll have something new
to bitch about..” Lex said softly still watching the mirror even though
the shop was long gone behind them.
Aiyla
chuckled as Saffron snorted and slumped lower in his seat. She glanced
over at Lex, sitting at ease with his hands folded demurely in his lap.
The bright red hair done up in a French braid with a couple simple, yet
decorative bobby pins; the simple make up job to hide the inverted tear
drop tattoos beneath his eyes; the elegant drop pearl earrings with the
matching necklace and bracelet that Auron, of all people, had given
him. Simple , classic… and on Lex… intriguingly sexy… She snorted
softly, turning her full attention back to the street ahead of her. The
boy could wear a prison jump suit and make it look good… but give him a
dress or a skirt and watch out…She wondered how many hearts he’d
managed to break in the few hours since he’d given his brother the slip back at the room…

** Chapter 4 **
Faal
watched the intriguing young woman climb into the car with the other
two and drive off, his curiosity peeked. It was a rare occasion that
someone sparked his interest so intensely and he wondered just what it
was about her that drew him so…
“The items are packed and ready, sir. Is there anything else?”
Faal
turned to find his personal assistant hovering at his shoulder. “No,
that will be all here I believe…Actually, wait.” he said, casting a
glance back out the window. “Run the name Mordant for me. Check all the
bed and breakfasts and hotels in the area.” He turned from the window
and strode towards the door. “See that everything gets to its proper
destination and then meet me at the Chateau with your findings. I trust
you should have something for me by seven?”
The young woman was hastily making a note of it as she followed him. “Of course. Do you have a first name to search as well?”
“No…any
reservations will be under her father’s name I believe… actually… run
it anyhow. Lexine. It’s a rather unique name… if there’s anything, you
shouldn’t have any trouble locating it. They’re from out of town, so a
background search will have to be wide range… but do as you see fit,
Miranda.. all I wish to know is where they’re staying…”
She
followed him out to his car, still making notes. “Of course, sir..
anything else I can turn up is icing. Got it. I’ll see you at Chateau
at seven, sir.”
Faal
raised an eyebrow at her as he turned the key in the ignition and the
car roared to life. “Icing’… really Miranda.. where do you get these
things?” he asked with a smirk. “Get busy.. you’ve got just over three
hours…” he said as he pulled away from the curb and drove off.
**
“I’ll
be meeting with a dealer tonight for supper.” Kay said as Lex and the
others entered the parlor. She glanced at the sour look on Saffron’s
face as he slumped into the nearest chair and gave Lex a curious look. “Problems?”
Saffron
snorted but didn’t answer. Aiyla perched on the arm of his chair,
earning a glare from him. “Ignore him.. he’s just pissed off because a-
Lex gave him the slip again, and b- I wouldn’t let him drive…”
“And don’t forget c .. you made him sit in the back..” Lex added helpfully as he studiously avoided his brothers gaze.
Auron
snorted at Saffron then turned a disapproving look on Lex. “I wish
you’d stop that, Lex… you have too many enemies out there to be safe on
your own. Or have you forgotten the death curse incident and numerous
kidnappings so soon…?”
Lex blushed, sinking a bit deeper into his chair.
“Auron,
please. “ Kay said softly, moving to sit on the arm of Lex’s chair,
much the same as Aiyla. “Lex has no control over the creeps that decide
to target him. He shouldn’t have to live like a prisoner because of
them. He’s taken pretty much every lesson he can on self defense,
weapons training… all of it. I’ll admit, back home where we know he has
a certain shadow lurking, a body guard is a good idea… but here? Auron…
we’re almost half way across the country and he’s in disguise. Can’t
you ease up on him just a little?”
Auron
glared at her for a moment then sighed and looked to Lex. “I’m just
worried about you, Lexine. I nearly lost you over that damned curse… “
“But
you didn’t.” Kay said, one arm around Lex’s shoulder. “Look at him,
Auron. He’s fine. The curse is broken, he’s regaining his strength more
each day.. he needs this vacation, Auron… you know we don’t have that
long before Jasmine will take him to the Seal and… well… let him have
some time to himself without a shadow following his every move, if he
chooses. We’ve all got cell phones on us at all times.. he can call if
he needs us. And I’m sure Saffron has other things he could be doing.
Speaking of which… has anybody turned anything up yet?”
Aiyla
gave a huge sigh, making Saffron roll his eyes and lean farther away
from her. “Alas no… I tracked several of the book to various shops, but
the dealers refuse to share their buyers lists with me… it would be a
simple feat to access their data banks….except this is no-wheresville…
not a single one of these places has all their records on computer! Can
you believe that? “
Auron frowned. “How is that possible.. I thought most of them did a huge amount of business over the internet…?”
Saffron
snorted. “Sure, but anyone can set up a website…it’s quick and easy and
can be done in minutes if your not picky on design… they may even use
the computers to keep track of sales and what not… but they’re not
so eager to go through weeks of work to upload all their old files… and
unless the customer is purchasing from online, chances are, they wont
be listed on the computer as any more then a sales number…and even
then…”
Auron
sighed and held out an arm to his wife who smirked and left Lex’s side
to go sit next to her husband. “So in other words.. another dead end…”
Aiyla
smiled. “No.. not a dead end… the records ARE there after all… I just
can’t access them from afar… it’ll just take a bit longer… this little
town is like book heaven… there are three rare books stores that have
internet businesses, two more that don’t, plus there’s still the three
libraries that, although a long shot, might provide us with some clue
if we can gain access to their record on patrons who’ve accessed the
rare books section or requested access…” she sighed again and let
herself fall over onto Saffron’s lap with a smirk. “Plus there are
still the private dealers….”
Kay
tried to hide her smile as Saffron shoved the petite blonde off of him
and moved to another chair, leaving Aiyla to stretch out in the one
he’d abandoned with a smug look on her face. “I’m meeting with one of
them tonight at seven thirty. An old friend I managed to track down.
When he found out I was married he invited the rest of you too.”
Saffron
snorted. “Count me out. I’d rather stay here with the little old ladies
and their book club meeting then play happy family with him looking
like that…” he said pointing at Lex with a sneer.
Auron
wiped a pillow across the room, smacking Saffron squarely in the face.
“I’ve had enough of that. You know what’s going to happen.. Lex has
spent a great deal of time dealing with this knowledge and has accepted
it. He’s chosen to try to get used to the idea and
so have we. So stop it. If it bothers you so much to see him this way,
then maybe you should start thinking of him as your sister NOW and be
done with it. We’ve already had his birth certificate altered and we’ve
decided to introduce him as Lexine… our daughter…and a week or so from
now it’ll be true. Deal with it.”
Saffron held the pillow in his lap and refused to meet his fathers gaze. “Sure… easy for you to say…” he muttered sullenly.
“What did you say?”
“Enough..
please..” Kay interjected., rolling her eyes at Aiyla. “Auron, give him
time. You’ve had more time with Lex then Saffron has. You know him
better. Saffron is still getting used to having a brother and now
that’s changing and he’s having trouble with it. Saffron,” she turned
her gaze to her step-son. “please.. reconsider dinner…?”
She
sighed as he snorted in answer. “Fine. So three members of the family
shall be missing from dinner. If your sister calls, can you find out
how things are going on the dig? She was so excited about the
invitation to take part… personally, I don’t see it, but then I’ve
always preferred being on the outside of tombs
myself… no doubt she just wanted to get out of babysitting her little
brother.. good thing Sylvie’s a pushover for kids..”
Another snort from Saffron, but this time he added. “Sure.”
“Well…I’d better get going” Aiyla said.” I promised Nate I’d give him a call and let him know how things are going, plus Eire
should be back soon and it looks like we’ve got a night of,,,
extra-curricular activities ahead of us… care to join us Saffron?”
Saffron shot her a look. “Eww.”
She
smacked him with another pillow. “Puhlease, you pervert… he’s my
fiancé’s best friend. I meant we have some stores to break into and
files to ransack…”
Saffron
smirked and added her pillow to the one already in his lap. “I’ll think
about it…” he said, watching her as she stood and walked towards the
door. Just as she was about to leave he wiped a pillow at her, smacking
her across the ass. She spun with a glare pointing a finger imperiously
at him. “You wait mister… just wait..”
Kay shook her head. “Saffron… why do you insist on making your life so difficult? You know she’s going to get you back…”
Saffron
turned a grin on her and gave a little shrug as he stood, dropping the
second pillow onto the chair. “She can try…” he said. “Later.. enjoy
dinner. “ he said and slipped out of the room heading for the stairs.
“I
guess I’ll go see what I can wear to dinner then…” Lex said softly and
stood, smoothing his skirt out as he did. “Seven thirty, you said?”
Kay smiled. “Yes.. be ready by seven so we’ll have time to find the place.. and what you’re wearing is fine, Lexi.”
Lex and Auron both answered at the same time. “No it’s not.” “Don’t be ridiculous.. I want to show off two of the three ravishing ladies in my life.”
Kay
looked at the both of them and rolled her eyes. “Wonderful.. so that
means I have to dress up too?” she shot Lex a look. “Traitor.”
Lex giggled, still blushing slightly at his fathers comment as he headed for the stairs and his room.

** Chapter 5 **
Kay stood for a moment, looking at the three photos she had set on the
vanity. The snap shot her mother had taken and kept safely hidden all
these years of Auron and herself with six month old Regan… the photo of
the four kids, Regan, Saffron, Lex and Devin taken that past fourth of
July.... the first holiday all of them had been together. And the one
of just her and Lex… she smiled as she looked at the picture of them
and remembered the day she’d first seen the tiny red head cowering
behind the shelf in Abadon’s library during her ‘tour’. She hated the
very idea of going to hell to met her father but that had turned out
fine… especially discovering he wasn’t the monster she’d assumed but
her dad... the same man who had raised her all those years.. just in
disguise.. But the tour of hell was beyond nightmare.. most of it was
fine.. except when they’d wound up entering
Abadon’s realm so her father could take care of some ‘business’… during
which one of Abadon’s slaves had whisked her off to the library… and
she’d seen Lex.
Auron’s
arms sliding around her from behind startled her and she laughed
softly, brushing her fingers over the photo as she set it back down.
“Don’t you know better than to sneak up on me? You’re lucky I wasn’t
armed…”
Auron chuckled and kissed her neck as he held her. “I didn’t sneak… you were merely distracted. “
“Hmm.. sorry… just remembering finding Lex…”
“I
can never thank you enough for that… every time I look at him I thank
god you found him and got him out of there. Who knows what would have
become of him if you hadn’t?”
“I’m
afraid to even think of that… at seventeen he’d already been through so
much… and he was so small… when I first saw him I took him for ten or
eleven… so thin and tiny…” she shuddered slightly and he held her
tighter, turning her around to face him. “But look at him now.. he’s
come so far…” she smiled up at him. “I’m so glad you found us… could
have done without finding Saffron though…” she
chuckled softly with a sly look and chuckled at his look. “I’m just
kidding of course. It’s just… hard to imagine some times…five years ago
it was just me and this terrified boy, newly freed from a life of
slavery, abuse and torture…then we met you… and I found myself falling
in love..” she chuckled softly and kissed him,. “..And then last year,
along came Saffron, and then Devin. And all our memories of our history
together... and now Regan…”
Auron
smiled softly, kissing her again. “We’ve been lucky… all of us have had
such hard and difficult lives… for us all to find each other… “ he
chuckled softly as he caught the reflection of the clock in the mirror
and kissed her. “We’d better get moving or we’re going to be late..
can’t keep your friend waiting too long…Thank you again, my love..” he
added softly, stroking her cheek.
“For what?” she asked softly, confused.
“For Lex. For all my children. For me.” He said softly and kissed her again.
“Mr. Dominic.”
Faal glanced up as
Miranda spoke and motioned her to the chair across from him, closing
his lap top and setting it aside. “Well?” he asked, softly, picking up
his glass and taking a sip as he leaned back in his chair. He was at
his usual table at the moment, the corner table with a fine view of the
doors and windows, with his back protected. He’d be moving to a
different table shortly to have room for his dinner guests, however. He
pulled the antique silver pocket watch from his pocket and glanced at
it before turning a frown on his assistant. “You’re late by the way.
I’m expecting guests shortly…”
“I’m
sorry, sir. It won’t happen again. “ she said, knowing better then to
offer an excuse. “I found only one listing for a Mordant in town… a
party of six has been registered under that name at a place at the edge
of town, Willow Dale Bed & Breakfast. They arrived this morning and
have paid in advance for a week with an option to extend their stay.”
Faal
smiled softly. “Only here for a week.. what are the odds that I would
meet her on her first day here?” he chuckled softly and motioned for
her to continue. “Thank you, Miranda… did you turn up anything extra?”
She
shook her head. “Nothing in State, no, but I’m still expanding the
search. Thanks to the very courteous hostess at Willow Dale, I now have
a place to focus on… the Mordant’s are visiting from Massachusetts.
I’m already running the scans and should have something for you by the
time you return from dinner… unless you’d rather wait until tomorrow?”
Faal nodded, pulling his lap top back around and flipping it open. “Tonight, if you have anything. Thank you Miranda.”
Miranda stood. “Have a good evening , sir.” She said and left. Faal glanced up and watched her leave. “Massachusetts…”
he said softly, remembering the stunning young red head from the book
shop. A soft ping from his computer brought his attention back around
and he went back to work, waiting for the maitre’ d to inform him that
the other table was ready.
He
didn’t have long to wait. Barely finishing the page he was working on,
he shut off the computer and slipped it into its case, handing it to
the maitre’d to keep for him. “Thank you.” He said, softly as he took a
seat at the larger table and nodded his
approval. The table was at the back, on a raised platform overlooking
an indoor coy pond with a little gurgling waterfall. One other table
shared the raised area, smaller and set to the side by a second stair so that there was no need for either party to squeeze past the other and interrupt anyone’s meal.
He
spotted the Maitre’d approaching again with a familiar white haired
beauty and he stood with a smile, walking around to meet them.
“Clarice. “ He said with a smile, lifting her hand to his mouth for a
kiss. “You look stunning as always.” He said and turned to the man
beside her. “And I take it this is your husband?”
“Yes, Faal Dominic, I’d like you to meet Auron Mordant.”
Faal
shook his hand as his heart seemed to skip a beat. “A pleasure to meet
you.” He said, trying not to show his surprise at the name also he
waved them to the table. “Clarice.. I thought you said you’d bring your
children with you as well?” he asked as he took his seat, Auron helping
Clarice into hers before taking his own seat beside her.
Kay chuckled softly. “Yes well… only two of the four are traveling with us.. The eldest daughter is off on an archaeological
dig, and the youngest son is back home with some friends. The eldest
son has declined to join us this evening, and the youngest daughter
will be along shortly.” She said.
Faal
felt a flutter of excitement at that. What were the chances that things
could fall so neatly into his lap like this? “Four children?” he shook
his head, smiling. “I never would have imagined it. They certainly
can’t be very old.”
Auron
chuckled softly, eyeing Kay’s blush. “Actually, Regan is thirty nine,
Saffron is twenty eight, Lexine is twenty two and Devin is two and a
half.” He said with a soft smile and Kay cleared her throat.
“Actually…. Lexine is twenty THREE.” She said with a look at Auron who blushed and chuckled. “Oops.”
Faal
smiled, chuckling softly. “Incredible.. hard to believe.” He said,
picking up the bottle of wine that was chilling in its bucket on a
serving cart beside the table. “Shall I?” he asked and they nodded. “Do
you think ..Lexine would care for a glass as well?” he asked as he
poured. “Or shall we wait until she joins us?”
“No
harm in waiting.. that way it’ll stay cold.” Kay said as she raised her
glass. Faal chuckled and set the bottle back in the ice, doing his best
not to keep watch for Lexine.
** Chapter 7 **
Lex
was standing at the makeup table in the ladies room staring at his
reflection. He’d decided to pass on the dress, he just had a hard time
finding dresses that looked right.. hopefully that would change when..
well.. when he did. He eyed his reflection again. The black creased
skirt was above the knees and just short enough that it had earned one
of ‘those’ looks from dad…over that he’d chosen a white ruffle front
blouse, which helped hide the fact there was nothing there in the way
of cleavage.. yet…
Simple.
He liked simple.. but with a bit of flare. Thus the knee high black two
inch heeled boots with the cherry charms on the zippers, the fish net
stockings and the corset backed, black velvet jacket, that hung down
just shy of the bottom of the skirt.... which it was really too warm to
wear in mid-July, but looked too great on him to leave off.
The jewelry ended with a pair of black
teardrop earrings and a black velvet choker with a garnet and pewter
charm. No bracelets.. no rings…nothing… unless you count the filigree
pewter and black hair sticks he’d used to do up his hair with…
He
sighed and considered washing off the makeup. He’d covered the tattoo’s
this morning so he’d attract less attention and slip into the places he
wanted to go easier… tonight it was because it was a nice restaurant
and he didn’t want to embarrass his father… the outfit wasn’t really
very dressy..
With
a final sigh he washed the tattoos clear and fixed the remaining
makeup, and immediately felt better. With a soft smile to his
reflection, he turned, scooping up the clutch he’d brought for the
night and left to find the maitre’d .
* *
“Sorry
I took so long.” A sweet familiar voice said and Faal glanced around to
see the Maitre’d at his side with Lexine, looking even more stunning
then he’d remembered. Hastily he stood even though the Maitre’d was
already helping her into her chair. She must have been in the ladies
room and he’d forgotten the second staircase, focusing on the path Clarice and Auron had taken to reach him…
“Faal..
this is our youngest daughter, Lexine.. Lexi, this is an old friend of
mine, Faal Dominic.” Clarice said from his other side.
He
found himself staring at the marks beneath her eyes, wondering it they
merely makeup.. and what reason she had for them. “Charmed my dear.” He
said softly, taking her hand and yet again kissing her knuckles. He
felt his heart give a flutter at her blush and realized he was still
standing. Reluctantly he let go of her hand and resumed his seat,
turning to Clarice. “Shame on you, Clarice.. you neglected to tell me
your daughter was as beautiful as her mother.. although I suppose I
should’ve suspected as much. “
He’d
tried not to look directly at the red head seated next to him too
often. For one reason her father had obviously noticed his first
reaction to her and was wary. For another, she was having
a very intoxicating effect on him and every time he looked at her he
lost track of the conversation. Her outfit was decidedly different from
what she’d been wearing earlier… much younger and .. .spunkier.. and
yet just as wonderful on her. If Clarice hadn’t said she was twenty
three, he could easily have taken her for younger dressed like this.
Somehow
they’d made it through dinner without too many embarrassing moments of
him losing track of things while staring at her, the conversation
focusing mostly on the years since they’d last seen each other. Auron
seemed a bit surprised to hear that Faal had been the one to originally
fund Chaos Incorporated, and still invested, although at a distance.
After all, one never knew when one might need a investigation firm in
ones pocket…Of course, if he’d known that for the past five years this
stunning creature beside him had been involved he’s might have taken a
more personal involvement…
“So,
Faal, Clarice tells us you’re a rare book dealer here in town?” Auron
finally asked as they were enjoying a glass of wine after their meal.
Faal
chuckled softly as he bowed his head slightly. “In a way… I travel
extensively, but I do have a place here that I tend to spend a fair
amount of time at. How could I resist living in a town that holds
literature in such high esteem?” he shot Lexine a smile. “And I’m not
exactly a dealer in rare books… people come to me with a request to
locate a certain book and I set to tracking it down and purchasing it
for them. Although my services are not limited to books, they do seem
to make up the bulk of my findings.” He turned his smile on Clarice, smirking slightly. “And of course, I tend to get distracted by acquisitions for my own collection… as well as the occasional one for yours.”
“Ours?” Lexine asked, glanced towards her mother before turning her gaze back at him.
“Yes… Just about all of your resources on computer come from my own collection, as well as various
books I’ve found for clients that I’ve waylaid long enough to copy to
disk for you. Clarice has also sent me the odd request for certain
volumes that I’ve had the pleasure of tracking down for you. “ he
smirked softly as he raised his glass again. “I had no intention of
becoming embroiled in your company when I originally invested in it,
and truthfully, I still don’t.. however I do indulge in the odd favor.
The last book request was an rather unusual one… quiet different from
the normal selection… The Club Dumas.. quite a refreshing change…”
Lex gave a tiny squeak at the mention of the book and he glanced up at her, intrigued. She
blushed, lowering her eyes to fidget with her glass and he found
himself drawn to the inverted tear drops beneath her eyes again. “My
birthday present…. I wondered how mom ever found it…”
Clarice
chuckled softly. “It’s her favorite book.. she’d read her old copy to
death, the poor thing, and we hadn’t been able to find a new one for
her… that’s why I called you. You out did yourself. I never expected
the first edition, and signed at that… her reaction when she saw it was
absolutely precious…”
Faal
smiled, his gaze once again on Lexine. “In that case, I’m even happier
to have found it for you. I trust you’re enjoying it?” he
watched the flush creep into her cheeks again as she nodded and lifted
her face to reward him with one of the most beautiful smiles he’d ever
seen. Whatever she had planned on saying to him was lost however, when
Auron interrupted.
“Yes..
thank you for finding it for us.” He said, setting his glass down. “The
reason I ask about your profession, is because of a case we’re
currently working on. I’m sure Clarice has mention to you that we’re
here on business? We’re tracking a book thief, among other things…”
Faal
turned his full attention to Auron, setting his own glass aside. “And
you want to know if I’ve had any of these stolen books pass through my
hands? “ he shook his head. “I seriously doubt it, but if you have a
list I’ll be more then happy to check my records. Obviously these books
must be very valuable or you wouldn’t have come all this way…”
“Incredibly
valuable.” Lexine said. “All of them very rare. I have a complete
listing of course, but we don’t think the books were stolen with the
intent to resell them. They were mostly magic tomes and grimoires… some
related to the Fae…”
Faal
raised an eyebrow and turned his glance to Clarice. “Well,, if you
aren’t here to ask me if I’ve seen them… how can I be of help you? I
tend to avoid the shadier dealers in my searches, so I’m not sure I
could even point you in a helpful direction…. And even then, that would
be useless if you don’t believe they’ll be resold….”
“We believe he’s building his own library.. as Lexi said, they’re mostly
all incredibly powerful books… powerful enough for him to kill their
former owners to get to them...” Clarice said, keeping her voice soft
so it wouldn’t carry to the other tables.
“We
also believe that he might be fae…” Auron said, his eyes resting on
Faal in a rather unnerving way. “I understand you’re fae? And have a
rather extensive collection of rare books…?”
Faal
sat back, a look of shocked amusement on his face. Surely they had
nothing to point to him and this was all due to his attentions toward
the man’s daughter. “Are you insinuating that I had something to do
with these heinous crimes? That I murdered someone to steal their
books?!” he shot Clarice a look of disbelief and noticed the shock on
her own face. “Sir, I would be more then pleased to grant you complete
access to my collection so you may satisfy your curiosity. Access to my
entire home, if it would help convince you of my innocence in this
matter. The first thing you will notice, and would already know if
you’d bothered to consult your wife on this before
hand… is that I don’t collect magical tomes… I don’t have a single book
containing a spell or anything of the sort in my entire library. I am Fae… our magic is inherent… we don’t need to use spell books… and certainly not mortal ones…”
Lexine
was blushing furiously on his left as was Clarice on his right. The man
across from him however, was still looking at him with that coolly
calculating look. “Auron…” Clarice hissed softly, leaning towards her
husband, her hand gripping his arm. “Excuse us for a moment, Faal… I
need a word in private with my husband…”
Faal
nodded and stood as she left the table, taking an obviously reluctant
Auron with her. He watched them wind their way towards the patio
entrance as he sat back down, intensely aware that he was now alone
with Lexine…
“I’m sorry… dad can be a bit .. extreme at times…”
He
turned and gave her a soft smile. “It’s quite alright, Miss Mordant…
don’t worry yourself over it. I am curious about a couple things
however….” He watched her turned her gaze to her lap where she was
fiddling with the clasp on her clutch. “Why didn’t you tell them we’d
met earlier?”
The blush deepened, creeping down her neck. “I could ask the same of you…”
He chuckled softly. “I would never presume… you didn’t mention it, so I assumed you had your reasons. Was I wrong?”
She
shook her head, the black stones swinging gently from her earlobes drew
his eyes. “No.. I just… didn’t think…” He watched her reach out and
pick up her glass, taking a hasty drink before toying with the stem of
the glass. “You said you had a few things you were curious about….?”
He
chuckled, intrigued by the way she seemed to bounce from shy to playful
to all business. “Yes… I don’t recall seeing those intriguing tear
drops on your beautiful face this afternoon…”
“I had them covered with makeup… thought it might be easier to slip in to see the collections without them drawing attention…”
Against
his better judgment, he found himself reaching a hand out to brush a
thumb across one of the tattoos. “They’re quite… intriguing.. but then
so are you. “ he said softly as she glanced up in surprise at the
gentle touch. “I was beyond thrilled to discover you’d be joining me
for dinner tonight, Lexine… now that we’re better
acquainted I hope you’ll reconsider my earlier invitation… and the new
one of course… my collection and my home are open to you so that you
may set your fathers fears at ease concerning me.”
Realizing
he was making her uncomfortable, he reluctantly withdrew his hand, his
thumb burning from the contact. “I’m sorry… please forgive me my
forwardness. I’m not usually so …” he felt a blush creep over his face
and knew the glamour was showing it. “Well…well, let’s just say that I
find you not only intriguing, but utterly captivating as well.”
A
glimpse of white flashed across the corner of his eye and he sighed. “I
believe your parents are finished discussing me and are about to rejoin
us. I do hope you will consider my offer, Miss Mordant…I would greatly
look forward to getting to know you better..”
Before
she had a chance to answer, Clarice and Auron took their places, Auron
somewhat reserved, but still casting unpleasant looks in his direction
whenever he didn’t think his wife was aware of it.

** Chapter 8 **
“I trust your evening went well, sir? You certainly looked pleased.”
Faal chuckled softly as he handed over his coat. “Yes. It went splendidly. I trust Miranda is in my study?”
The
butler bowed his head with a small smirk. “Indeed, sir. She’d been in
there for quite awhile, actually. Should I bring you anything?”
Faal shook his head as he headed for his study. “No, I think that will be all for the evening. Good night, Kevin.”
“Good night, sir.” Kevin said, carefully brushing off the coat as he went to hang it up and lock up for the night.
Miranda was pacing back and forth with a rather worried expression on her face when he entered. “Something, wrong, Miranda?”
She
spun, her surprise clearly showing on her face before she managed to
get control of herself. “Yes.. well.. no, not really…it’s this girl you
asked me to look into…”
Faal raised an eyebrow as he sat down in his chair and swiveled around to watch her. “Lexine Mordant? What about her?”
The
tall brunette hesitated for a moment before coming around to his desk
and typing on his keyboard for a moment, then turning the screen for
him to see. “I found a birth certificate, adoption records, certificates and diplomas for home schooling and various college courses… drivers
license… Your mystery girl just turned twenty three, is five foot three
inches tall, and has red hair and green eyes. She has a 1965 Shelby Mustang and has been arrested twice under suspicion of street racing but the charges were apparently dropped both times. She’s employed at Chaos Incorporated, a firm that specializes in Para
natural and supernatural investigation, as an archivist and personal
assistant. This is where it gets down right scary… this little doll of a girl… has been licensed for fifteen different types of firearms. FIFTEEN.! She has a license to
carry concealed weapons and blades over the legal length, up to and
INCLUDING swords… SWORDS! “ Miranda turned and resumed pacing as Faal
leaned his head against his hand and smiled in amusement at the
information scrolling past on his screen.
“Thanks to that law they passed about martial arts and self defense training being a ‘weapon’, I had
listings for every thing along those lines that she’s been certified in
over a certain level of achievement…” Miranda shook her head and threw
out her hands. “I didn’t even know there WERE that many!”
Faal
just smiled bigger as he read the file for himself, chuckling softly.
“Impressive. I had no idea just how intriguing you were going to prove
to be, Lexine…” he said softly.
Miranda
turned to gape at him in shock. “Mr. Dominic..! Sir.. this girl is
dangerous! Even if you take away all the weapons and training… she
still works for a Para natural investigation firm!! “
Faal
turned amused eyes to his assistant. “Yes, my dear.. I’m aware of that.
An investigation firm that you’d discover I hold a large amount of
stock in, if you’d bothered to check… and who’s investigation I just
finished turning away from me.”
Faal
glanced up to see that Miranda was obviously in shock at this news, and
wondered how much of the evening she’d spent worried about this. “By
the way, we’ll be having a guest or two drop by
to examine the house and collections at some point in the near future.
See to it that they’re made welcome and given every courtesy. We need to show them that I have nothing to hide and have no part in this .. tragedy…they’re investigating.”
Miranda
hesitated a moment before pulling herself together. “Yes, sir.” She
said softly and started for the door slowly. “Mr. Dominic, sir…” she
said, turning at the door. “I still think this Lexine is dangerous to
you… “
Faal
waved a hand at her as he continued to flip through the file. “And I
think you’re out of line, Miranda. I suggest you retire for the night.”
A few moments later he heard the soft click of the door closing and he
chuckled again as he read over Lexine Mordant’s file. “My dear dear
girl… you are a treasure…” he said softly, his eyes sparkling.

** Chapter 9 **
Auron glanced up as Lexine entered the room, and
began choosing over the breakfast tray set out for them on the buffet
by their hostess. He was wearing slacks this morning, low slung black
with a faint pinstripe running through them, and somehow very feminine; along
with a green version of the blouse he’d worn to supper, only this one
was sleeveless. Black lace fingerless gloves stretched over his elbows,
covering the exact area that was once covered in scars. The same black
teardrop earrings dangled form his ears, but the pendant on the choker
had been exchanged for vibrant green gemstone.
“Miss
your sister that much, do you?” Auron asked with a smirk as he watched
him choose a small bowl of fruit salad and a muffin.. a veritable feast
compared to what Lex normally ate for breakfast. The red head set his
food down and looked up at his father with a questioning glance as he
slid into his seat. “Hmm? Well sure…I guess… how can you tell?”
Auron
smirked and pointed to the pony tail gather high at the back of his
head… in his sisters usual style. Lex blushed and smiled softly,
shrugging as he began nibbling at the muffin.
Kay
glanced at him with a smile, happy to see him eating better and
obviously in good spirits. This vacation was obviously good for him,
just like she’d thought. Lex surrounded by a seemingly endless supply
of books was always a good thing for him… and the quickest way to get
him to agree to something. Even ‘resting’ or putting up with his
brother. “Big plans for the day, Hun?” she
asked, noticing the messenger bag ready and waiting by his chair.
“Starting on the Archives purchases already, or are you going to browse
a bit more…”
Lex
smiled softly and shook his head. “Neither… I’m going to Mr. Dominic’s
to survey his collection and house. He did invite us and since the rest
of you are busy anyhow and wouldn’t know what to look for even if you
did go…”
“No.
Absolutely not.” Auron said, setting his cup down a bit too hard,
sending a bit of coffee sloshing over the rim to stain the white lace
table cloth.
Kay
glared at her husband. “Auron…” she said carefully, drawing his
attention, but her husband ignored her. “No, Clarice.. He’s not going…I
don’t care if he’s an old friend of yours, as far as I’m concerned he’s
a potential suspect and he’s not going there alone.”
Lex
winced slightly, popping another piece of muffin into his mouth as his
mothers voice dropped dangerously low. “Potential suspect… “ she
repeated. “ Auron… aside from the fact the he’s fae, loves books and
lives in the town you said had a ‘slim’ chance of leading us to our
guy, there is nothing that implicates him in this. He doesn’t even
collect the kind of books that are being taken.” She said coldly,
glancing at Lex. “Eat your breakfast sweetheart.. you don’t want to be
late. I’m sure you’re eager to get started.” She shot Auron a look
before he could argue. “The only… and I repeat ONLY reason you’re being
so unreasonable about him, is because he’s obviously attracted to Lex.
Really, Auron… three quarters of the men we meet are. He’s the Daughter
of the Seal and very attractive to boot! Men are going to look and
flirt. If you’d bothered to notice, Faal was extremely polite about it
and did nothing to draw attention to his feelings. And in no way tried
to force his attention on him. Faal has always
been a complete gentleman, Auron.. more so then you even.” She picked
up the paper beside her, turning her back slightly to him as she opened
it to read. “If you keep acting like this… you can take yourself off
the case and go home with your son. Lex and I will finish this
ourselves.”
Lex
slouched in his chair as he nibbled his way through his breakfast,
casting nervous uncomfortable glances between his parents. Finally
Auron shoved back his chair and left the room, not saying a word to
either of them. He watched him go then sighed. “Maybe I shouldn’t go…”
Kay
set the paper aside and finished her coffee. “Don’t be silly,
sweetheart. Your father is just being a paranoid stubborn ass of an
over protective father. He’ll only get worse once you fill out those
outfits better, you know… “ she said with a soft reassuring smile.
“Would you like a ride?”
Lex
blushed slightly at the mention of his becoming a girl and shrugged,
“Sure.” he smiled, quickly finishing the last few pieces of fruit.
“Maybe I should just call Jasmine and see if we can go now… just.. get this over with…” he said softly as he stood, pushing in his chair. “I mean… the closer it gets, the more nervous everyone seems to be and… well…”
Kay
came around to his side as he slung his bag over his shoulder. “If
that’s what you want, Lex. It’s your choice. I’m sure if Jasmine wasn’t
available to take you, she could sweet talk Estehl into it. But you
shouldn’t rush into it just because of how others feel…”
Lex
snorted softly, checking his bag one last time to make sure he had
everything. “It doesn’t really matter, mom… the only choice I have is
when, and even that’s limited. It’s going to happen, so it might as
well… I was just stalling I guess, by setting the date with Jasmine…
there’s no point in putting it off to ‘get used to it’… it’s better if
I just do it and deal with it. All this pretending is just…” he gave a
sigh and turned a wry smirk to his mother. “What does it matter if they
deal with the idea of it, or the reality of it…?At least when it’s
reality, Saffron will have to shut up about me being in ‘drag’….”
Kay
nodded seriously. “Yes, I suppose he will.. of course, this also means
you’ll have to throw out all of your clothes and buy new ones… unless
you’re extremely lucky and can get away with a good seamstress and some
alterations, but really.. Lex.. when have you been that lucky?”
Lex looked up at her and caught her smirk and gave a soft chuckle. ”Well I have you.. that’s pretty lucky…”
“True
true..” She said, slipping an arm around Lex’s waist as they headed for
the car. “But then I always thought that was my good luck..”
As Kay slid behind the wheel, she turned and glanced at Lex again. “So.. You’re going to call Jasmine tonight?”
Lex thought for a moment then shrugged. “Yeah.. maybe. I’ll think about it a bit more, but.. I think I will.”
She
smiled softly and started the car. “And your father acts this bad now…”
she shook her head with a soft sigh and chuckled as she pulled out of
the drive. “God help us survive the force that is fatherhood…”

** Chapter 10 **
“Mr. Dominic ?”
Faal didn’t
glance up from his computer where he was working, but waved for the
speaker to continue as he spoke. “Yes, Miranda…? Shouldn’t you be on
your way by now?”
“Yes
sir… I was on my way out when… Miss Mordant is here to inspect the
collection, sir. I showed her to the main library. Shall I cancel my
appointment..?”
Faal waved
her off again. “No, no.. don’t be ridiculous. Go on. I don’t need a
body guard, despite all your worries over Miss Mordant’s file.” He
chuckled softly, making her blush. “Go on, Miranda.. you shouldn’t keep
the clients waiting. It’s bad for business.”
He
continued to work as he listened to her leave. He wanted nothing more
then to drop everything and rush off to the library to see Lexine, but
he forced himself to wait. Finish the file. Take his time. If
he rushed in when she’d only just arrived, he might risk scaring her
off or making her too nervous to remain in his company. Better to go
slow and let her become comfortable first.
After
he had to force himself back to work for the third time, he sighed and
turned, hitting the button that opened the wall behind him to reveal
the security monitors. He found it much easier to finish his work once
he could glance over his should and catch a glimpse of the young woman
strolling slowly through his library, comforted by the proof that she
was there and hadn’t left before he had a chance to speak to her.
His
unexpected attraction to her had sparked his curiosity. And now, with a
chime from his computer indicating he had a message, his curiosity was
rewarded. He leaned back in his chair, turning to face the image
of Lexine in the library, his fingers steepled in front of him. “My
Lexine.. but you just continue to be full of surprises…” he said with a
soft chuckle. “I knew there was something incredibly special about you,
but you keep astonishing me with just how special.” He reached over and
turned his computer monitor enough so he could see the reflection of
its screen in the blank monitor below her. “The Daughter of the Seal… “
he said, looking at the emblem that had been sent to him by his
contact. “And here I thought the Fates would conspire to keep you away
from me.. perhaps the thought of me as your Guardian amuses them…” he
chuckled again. “It certainly amuses me. “
With
a sigh he turned and shut off his computer and closed the wall again.
“I think I’ve kept you waiting longer enough, my dear.” He said to the screen as the monitor switched off and the panel slid closed.
He was still chuckling softly to himself as he closed the study door behind him and headed for the library.

Lex
was truly impressed by the number of first editions that he was seeing.
And they were all in incredible condition… A title caught his eye and
he carefully removed it from the shelf and its protective covering. He
gave a soft smirk as he traced the title with the lightest of touches. “Alice in Wonderland…” he read the title softly, remembering it was the last book he’d read as
a slave.. or started too.. his mother had rescued him before he’d
finished.. Although she’d given him his own copy soon after. With a soft sigh, he recovered the book and returned it to its shelf.
“I hope I’m not interrupting…?”
Lex jumped slightly as he finished returning the book. “Oh!” he blushed and laughed softly “You startled me…”
Faal
smiled softly. “I’m sorry… I certainly didn’t intend to sneak up on
you.” he said. “Finding everything alright? Or not finding, as the case
may be…” he said with a soft chuckle.
Lex
smiled softly, still blushing and fiddled with his reading glasses.
“Yus thank you .. and no,” he said softly. “I hope I’m not too early..
you’re girlfriend seemed a bit .. put out…when she showed me in…”
Faal looked confused. “Girlfriend? Ah!” he chuckled softly. “You must mean Miranda. Miranda is not my girlfriend, Miss
Mordant .. she’s my personal assistant. And she tends to be a bit ..
over protective of me at times. Pay her no mind. “ he smiled softly,
looking completely at ease, as if he should be leaning against the
shelf rather then standing beside it. “As for
you being too early? Nonsense.. I tend to get an early start myself…
and it was an open invitation, after all….”
Lex
blushed harder and turned back to the shelf so Faal wouldn’t see.
“Thank you…” he said softly, making an attempt to continue checking the
books. “You’re being very nice about all this…”
Faal chuckled softly behind him and Lex felt a little shiver go down his spine at the sultry sound of it. “I’ll
leave you to your work then, Miss Mordant. When you’re finished in here
to your satisfaction, I do have a second library here in the house for
my more personal collections. I assume you’ll wish to see them as
well.” He chuckled softly and moved on before he Lex had a chance to
comment. “Perhaps you would care to join me for a bite to eat around
noon? I shall be working in my study for a bit this morning as well as
taking care of a few errands, but I usually take a break around noon in the solar… “
Lex kept his gaze on the books in front of him , still blushing furiously. “I’d love to…” he said softly.
“Excellent..
I’ll inform my staff. If you need anything just ask any of my people.
I’ll make sure someone let’s you know the time…if you’re anything like
me around books, then you’ll need the head’s up..” he chuckled again
and then paused.. “Well then…. I’ll leave you then… I’m very glad you
accepted my offer, Miss Mordant.”
Lex
turned , meaning to tell him he didn’t need to keep calling him Miss
Mordant all the time… only to find him already on his way out the door.
He sighed, watching the long blonde braid vanish behind the already
closing door. He wished he knew what it was about him… He’d never
reacted this way to anyone else before.. not even Rowen. Rowen had
needed all his coy looks and sexy come-ons and flirting to make him
blush like this… Faal need only smile at him. What
was it about the tall, charismatic, young looking and definitely
attractive Faal Dominic that broke through all his barriers and
threatened to turn him into a giggling school girl without the Seal’s
help…?
Lex
shook his head with a soft snort and turned his attention back to the
job at hand, and found himself looking forward to lunch…. the meal he
was most likely to skip completely. No way was he going to skip it
today… not and miss out on the chance to spend some time with Faal
without his father or mother peering over his shoulder.
** Chapter 12 **
Faal stalked
back to his office, forcing the image of Lexine from his mind as he
pulled his cell phone from his pocket and called Miranda. As soon as he
heard it connect he spoke, not even letting her
say hello. “I want you in my study the second you are finished.” He
said, his voice cold and hard, then snapped the phone closed again.
He keyed the wall of security monitor open and on so he could see Lexine meticulously working her way through the shelves.
Pacing for a few moments trying to work out his anger, he kept one eye on the monitor. Watching the redhead at
work, he found himself calming some what. The sight of her in his
library surrounded by his books… knowing she was just a short distance
away was very… soothing..
He’d managed to stop pacing and was leafing
through the mail when the portal opened and Miranda stepped through. He
looked up and set the mail aside. “Miranda…” he said, and she stiffened
at the tone of his voice. “There seems to have been a misunderstanding
earlier… and I’m very curious as too how it came to be…” his voice was
once again the cold hard tone it had been over the phone as he stood
and walked around his desk to stand in front of her.
“Lexine
said that … my girlfriend seemed a bit put out when she’d let her in
this morning…” He watched Miranda blush slightly at that. “Now… why
would she get the impression that you were my girlfriend…. Or that you
were ‘put out’ about her being here? After all, I seem to remember
explicit instructions concerning offering her every courtesy…”
“Sir, I..”
“Miranda… keep in mind… I can always watch the security footage…” he watched her face actually grow paler at that.
“I’m
sorry sir, I was out of line…. But….” She froze mid sentence as Faal
stopped in front of her and looked down at her. He watched her throat
bob nervously as she swallowed and dropped her eyes.
“But…?” he said softly in that cold voice. “Go on, Miranda.. you were saying…?”
“Noth .. nothing, Sir.. Merely that it won’t happen again.” She replied nervously.
“No..
it won’t happen again…” he said softly, as he walked around her. He
leaned close to her and said softly in her ear. “Last chance, Miranda…
do not question me and do not interfere…”
“No sir… I’m sorry sir….”
Faal walked past her back to his desk and waved her off. “ Leave.” He said simply and was rewarded by the prompt appearance of another portal.
He sat back down and after a moment called up a link to one of his offices and put in a request for a search for another personal assistant. He had a feeling that Miranda wasn’t going to be with him much longer.

** Chapter 13 **
By
the time Lex was aware some one had entered the library, he was on his
knees at the bottom shelf in the first corner, book open on the floor,
ledger in his lap. He looked up to see the butler appear and give a
slight bow of the head. "Lunch is served, miss. If you'll follow me."
Closing
his ledger he slipped it back in his messenger bag and flung the strap
over his shoulder, standing. The butler turned to lead the way out of
the library and Lex hurried to follow with one more glance about the
library. The butler led the way to a half open solarium in the back.
Faal was already there and he stood as Lex approached, pulling out a
chair for her.
Lex
sat down with a smile and realized his pencil was still behind his ear
and pulled it out, slipping it into his bag as he sat that by his feet.
Faal sat back down with a charming smile. "How are you enjoying the
library?" He asked.
"You have a really...outstanding collection..." Lex replied softly with a slight smirk.
"And have you found the stolen books yet?" Faal asked with a soft smirk of his own.
Lex
blushed, smiling a bit. "No. But I have found some interesting pieces.
Esopi's Vitta for instance, that reasonally thirty thousand dollars
alone, even in the vellum binding."
Faal sat back in his chair, with a casually impressed look. "Thirty thousand you say?"
"Or there abouts..." Lex replied softly, looking at his hands in his laps. He heard Faal chuckle softly.
"And
to think I only paid about three thousand." He said with a soft smirk
watching Lex blush even more. He sat forward and poured them both a
glass of white wine. "Have you seen the The British Herbal? Circa
1756?"
Lex blinked. "THE British Herbal, an estimated seventeen thousand...?"
Faal
nodded, picking up his glass and taking a sip. "Or perhaps the Gallery
of Fashion, London, turn of the eighteenth century I believe." He
continued to watch her, the way her eyes widened and sparkled. She
picked her up own glass, taking a sip. "Pay extra attention to the
bookcase furthest from the window. This includes a first edition of
Liber Chronicarum. Possibly one of the most expensive in there." He
said with a grin.
"The
Nuremberg Chronicle..." Lex swallowed, a folio worth over two hundred
thousand, he'd seen only one other edition, at an auction
"Indeed.
Not too many copies of that one as I understand it." Faal replied, as
he spotted lunch coming out. "So tell me, besides books, what else do
you enjoy?"
Lex
blushed slightly, taking another sip of wine. He'd have to be careful
with the wine...to much and he'd never finish with the library. But
this man wouldn't stop make him blush. "I like cars." He said softly,
not looking at Faal. "Muscle cars, drag racers. I have a sixty five
Shelby mustang..." He left out the tendency for drag racing.
"You like cars, or just going fast?" Faal asked as the wait staff set lunch before them.
"A little of both I suppose..." Lex answered, finally looking up at him. "What about you?"
Faal
chuckled softly. "I'm afraid I'm cursed, or blessed, with a Fae's short
attention span. So unless it truly speaks to me, I tend to get bored of
it quickly. When it does speak to me, it’s a passion for life..."
Their gazes locked as he said that and Lex felt a flutter run through
him. As he found himself staring at those pale turquoise blue eyes, he
had a sudden sobering thought. Were they the same color beneath the
glamour. For that matter, did he look anything like he did now without
it? He knew nothing about this man … he needed to remember that…
“I’ll
admit to a love of cars as well… Not as extensive as my books
collection, but rather impressive on its own. I have a weakness for the
sleek and flashy, but it has to have the capabilities for speed. “He
said as he unfolded his napkin and laid it across his lap. “I own a few
cars on various professional circuits and occasionally pop down to
take one out for a spin… but I’ve never actually raced one..
professionally, anyhow.” He added with a smirk that made Lex’s eyebrow
go up.
“Meaning .. you’ve raced one ‘unprofessionally?”
Faal blushed slightly as he chuckled. “Let’s just say, I’ve had my moments….”
Lex
tilted his head to one side, a piece of salad pierced on his fork
forgotten for the moment as he considered the man across from him. The
phrase ‘too good to be true’ kept flashing through his mind, and yet he
couldn’t deny he was interested. Hell... the man made him weak in the
knees and breathless with a word or look… interested was not the word
for it…
However,
.. As tempting as the urge to jump into the subject of cars and let
this line of thought go was… After considering it a moment, he found
himself comparing Faal to Rowen. If there was one thing he’d learned
from the disaster with Rowen, was that Rowen wouldn't be so forward if
Lex were to ask to see him with out a glamour. He wondered if Faal
was...
He took a breath, setting his fork down, the salad still untouched. “Mr. Dominic…” he began softly.
“Please… call me Faal… “ he said softly, setting his own fork aside.
Lex
blushed slightly. “Faal…” he said , starting again. “I was wondering..
I mean… It’s alright if you’d rather not… I’m being very presumptuous
and rather nosey… and no doubt rather rude.. I’m not sure what the
etiquette for something like this is…” he said softly, dropping his
gaze to his plate as he felt his face begin to burn. “Would you mind…
that is… I was wondering if you’d consider…”
There
was a soft chuckle from across the small table. “You don’t need to be
nervous, Lexine.. may I call you Lexine? It’s such a beautiful name…”
Lex blushed harder but nodded. “Thank you.. as I was saying, you don’t
need to be nervous.. ask me what ever you’d like. I’ll do my best.”
Taking
a deep breath, Lex finally blurted out. “Would you mind dropping your
glamour? “ he said quickly, then snatched up his wine glass and took a
drink. The silence seemed to stretch on forever, but he supposed it had
been less than a minute when he glanced up to see Faal eyeing him
thoughtfully. He blushed even more fiercely and ducked his head,
snatching up his fork to stab fitfully at the salad. “I’m sorry… forget
I said anything… it’s alright really... I didn’t mean to insult you ..”
“No.
“ Faal said quietly and a hand appeared in Lex’s vision, gently
covering his own, stilling his attack on the salad. “No.. it’s quite
alright.. I don’t mind. I.. I was just surprised… I… no one has ever
asked that before…”
Lex
looked up at that, taking his eyes off the hand that felt as if it was
setting his own on fire, and had released a swarm of butterflies in his
stomach. “ No one? I find that hard to believe.”
Faal
chuckled softly and lowered his own eyes, slowly drawing his hand back
across the table. “Not really, Lexine… most people prefer not to see
the truth… it’s easier to take things as they appear…” he sighed so
softly that if Lex hadn’t been watching him, he never would’ve known.
“Perhaps they just don’t want to fully accept that I’m not just like
them… easier to see me as some spoiled young rich kid playing with too
money, then to see me as a creature that’s almost two thousand years
old….”
Lex
winced at the way he said ‘creature’, and was tempted to reach out to
him… but instead he gripped his fork in one hand and his glass in the
other, determined not to do anything until he knew whether or not the
man before him was any more believable than Rowen had been… the way
Faal Dominic made him feel… he needed to know. The memory of Rowen was
too powerful to risk reliving it in any way…
He’d
just decided that Faal wasn’t going to show him when there was a faint
ripple around him. Suddenly, it was as if his skin and hair was softer,
almost glowing in the light with a faint silvery cast. He took in the
elongated ears with the gentle points… and caught his breath as Faal
raised his head and Lex found himself staring into the most
extraordinary eyes he’d ever seen…
Lex
had no idea how long they sat across from each other staring, but he
had the strongest urge to touch him… to just reach across the table to
caress his cheek.. let his fingers feel that silken hair…
There
was a discrete cough from the door way and Lex blushed and looked
away, turning his attention to the still uneaten salad on his plate.
He was calling Jasmine today. As soon as he had a chance. He knew
there was something between Faal and himself, *wanted* there to be… and
he decided that since Faal believed he was a girl anyhow.. ..he wanted
to be one before anything happened between them.
“Excuse
me, sir… I don’t mean to intrude.. however there is a gentleman here
insisting on seeing Miss Mordant….” Lex looked up in surprise at that,
his eyes going to the butler then to Faal. “I showed him to the parlor
to wait….”
Faal raised an eyebrow, then shrugged. “Did the gentleman leave a name? Or perhaps a reason?”
“Dad….”
Lex said softly with a mix of dread and remorse. He knew his plans for
perusing the library as well as lunch with Faal were over… there was no
way dad would…
“Montgomery, sir… I believe he said his first name was…”
“Eire?!”
Lex asked in surprise, relief and curiosity flooding through him. He
looked over at Faal to see a curious look on his face. “Eire’s one of
the friends who are traveling with us. …one of my best friends,
actually.. I have no idea what he’s doing here though….”
Faal
pushed back his chair and stood, coming around to Lex’s side and
helping him to his feet. “Then I suggest we go find out so that we
might continue our meal. “ he said with a smile and turned to the
butler as they passed. “ Take care of this, please, Kevin… we’ll be
back shortly.” Lex saw the butler nod and move towards the table, then
they were through the doorway and headed towards the parlor…

** Chapter 14 **
“E’
?” Lex asked softly as he stepped into the parlor. The silver haired
half shade turned quickly and shot a cold glance over her shoulder.
Lex turned and saw Faal just behind her. “Would it be alright if we
spoke alone?” he asked softly and Faal tore his gaze away from the
other man and smiled softly. “Of course… shall I wait for you in the
solar?”
Lex
smiled softly. “If you don’t mind? Thank you… I won’t be long…” he
watched Faal tip his head slightly to him then turn and leave , closing
the door behind him. Lex turned to face Eire. “If you tell me dad sent
you…”
Eire snorted and shook his head. “Nah… yer mum did. Kinda…” he said with a smirk. “She’s been tryin’ to reach you. “
Lex
frowned and reached into his bag for his phone. Flipping it open he
sighed, then quickly flipped it closed again. “Sorry…” he said
sheepishly. “I always turn the ringer off when I’m working with books…
I just .. forgot to check for messages when I broke for lunch…”
Eire
chuckled, leaning back on the arm of a chair. “ ‘In the solar’…?” he
asked in a prissy voice and grinned at him. “Are ye spendin’ time with
th’ guy cause ye like him… or cause yer dad doesn’t?”
Lex
blushed , crossing his arms and leaning back against a book shelf. “You
know me better than that, Eire… I’d never do that.” He sniffed and
turned his face away so Eire couldn’t see his expression. “I was
working in the library and he asked me to join him for lunch… that’s
it. Not that it’s any of your business. Or anyone else’s for that
matter.”
“Aw.. come on, red.. ye know I was just kiddin’..” he said softly.
Lex gave a small shrug but didn’t look over at him. “Was there anything else, Eire?”
Eire
sighed and pushed away from the chair and headed slowly towards him.
“Nah.. I was in the neighborhood an’ yer mum asked me t’ pop in an’
tell ye to answer yer damned phone once in a while….” He stopped beside
him and rolled his eyes as Lex still refused to look at him. “Come with
me, Lex… I can’t put my finger on it.. but .. something about this guy
just makes m’ hackles rise up…”
Two
angry green eyes snapped up, piercing him and Lex gave him a poke in
the chest, sending him back a step. “Now you’re starting to sound like
my dad.” He said softly and pointed to the door. “If you’re finished
delivering your message... please leave. “
“Lex..”
“Leave.”
He repeated firmly and walked to open the door for him. “I mean, think
about it, E’… he’s Mom’s friend.. she’s known him for a long time…
don’t you think she’d be the first to say anything if she thought I was
in any danger?!” he said yanking the door open as he shook his head. He
left the door open and walked past Eire towards the window, pulling his
cell phone back out as he did, ignoring the half shade.
Eire stood for a minute, watching the red head, then shook his head softly with a sigh and left.
Lex
sighed and snapped his phone closed. His hands were shaking so bad he
kept hitting the wrong button. He rested his forehead against the
window for a moment and desperately wanted a cigarette. He looked up,
glancing around the room then went to the door. There was no sign of
Eire, thankfully, but he could hear the soft footfalls of someone just
around the corner. “Excuse me?”
The
butler appeared around the corner and smiled softly as he came towards
him. “How can I help you, Miss Mordant? “ he asked pleasantly.
Lex
blushed. “I … was wondering if.. that is….” he sighed and gave him a
sheepish look. “I really need a cigarette… I don’t want to be rude….”
The
butler chuckled softly and motioned for him to return to the parlor
then entered behind him. An ash tray suddenly appeared on the antique
writing desk beside him and he gave a short bow. “If you need anything
else, just call… I’m just down the hall. I’ll show you back to the
solarium when you’re ready.”
Lex smiled softly and nodded. “Thank you.”
With
a sigh, he took the ashtray to the nearest chair and sat, setting it on
his knee as he dug his pack of cigarettes out of his bag. The cigarette
was half gone by the time he felt calm enough to try the phone again,
and called up his messages first.
Three.
Two from his mother and one unknown number. He flicked his thumb nail
as he stared at the unknown number then sighed and listened to the two
messages from his mother. A request to meet up for lunch…. oops… and a
request to call her back about the case.
He eyed the third message but decided to leave it, and called his mom.
“Hey
baby… “ Kay s‘ voice sounded clearly in his ear and made him smile. He
watched the tip of his cigarette glow as it neared his fingers and then
stubbed it out. “You need to switch this thing to vibrate and clip it
to you… or put up with the noise. “ she said and he could practically
see the expression on her face.
Lex
smiled sheepishly and shifted in the chair, setting the ash tray on the
floor beside him and hugged his knees. “I’ll think about it. Sorry
about lunch. “
Kay
chuckled softly and he could imagine her rolling her eyes. “Don’t
worry, sweetheart… I know you and books… I suppose I’m lucky you came
up for air at all…”
“What do you need, mom?”
“Grab
your pencil… We discovered that two of the victims had recently
purchased books from the same auction house. The same night. Neither of
the books they’d purchased was listed among their collections nor was
either found after the murders… both were magical tomes, both with fae
ties. “
Lex dropped his feet to the floor. “Wait a minute… two… Mr. Swanson and Ms. Bourneville…?”
“You guessed it, sweetheart. “
“That’s
the tie then… not just the rare books… ALL of the victims had fae
related magical tomes and articles in their possession…” he said softly
and quickly pulled his ledger from his bag and wrote down the new
titles to watch for. As he finished writing a thought occurred to him.
“Mom… I know Faal said he didn’t have magical text… but he is fae…
surely he has something along the lines that’s being targeted..”
Kay
sighed and he could hear a faint tapping from the other end and could
picture her tapping a finger nail against her tooth. “Ask him. Find out
what he has. If he’s a potential victim, we need to know so we can
protect him. And, baby.. see if you can’t fit these books together.
Maybe there’s some other tie as well aside from what we know.” The was
a change in her tone and he had the sudden impression of a wry smile
with her next words. “Sorry about your vacation.”
Lex
giggled softly. “Mom… I’m in a mansion being waited on hand and foot
surrounded by books… in a town that caters to the literary minded and
practically worships books.. working on a case that involves a mystery
surrounding incredibly rare books….”
A
soft chuckle. “Right… what vacation .. you’re in heaven… Try to pull
yourself away long enough to call about supper, alright, sweetie? I
have no idea how things will be by then.”
“Sure
mom. You might want to sooth Eire’s ego when you see him… I kinda got
mad at him and kicked him out… you shouldn’t have sent him.. he got all
over protective and wound up sounding like dad… you know that irritates
me….” Lex said and pulled his knees back up to his chest.”
“Any blood shed?”
Lex blushed, laughing softly as he rolled his eyes. “No, mom… no blood shed.”
“Good..
because you know how bitchy he gets when he’s healing….” Another soft
chuckle. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. Talk to you later, baby. Love
you.”
“Love
you to, mom.” He snapped the phone closed and sat there, his chin
resting on his knees for a moment, thinking about the connection with
the books. His sudden concern over Faal being at risk sent him to his
feet and in search of the butler., the third message quite forgotten.

** Chapter 15 **
Faal was just snapping his own phone closed as Lex entered the solar and slid
back into his seat. The table had been cleared of everything but the
wine, and as he set his bag beside him, a fresh plate of salad was set
in front of him. He smiled his thanks and turned his attention to Faal.
“I hope everything is alright? I understand your friend didn’t look very pleased when he left…?”
Lex
rolled his eyes and picked up his glass, smiling softly to find the
wine cold… obviously this had been served fresh as well. “Yes… but
there’s been a bit of a break in the case… a stronger connection to all
the victims.” he said s he watched Faal unfold his napkin and place it on his lap.
“Really?
Well that’s wonderful! “ he said glancing up at Lex with a smile. “Why
then do you look so.. pensive? I assure you, Lexine… my library is open
to you whenever you like.. case or no….”
Lex blushed and shook his head slightly, looking at his plate. “No.. it’s not that .. but thank you. All the victims had magical tomes and
items concerning the fae taken from their collections…. I know you said
you didn’t have any magical tomes in your collection, but…”
Faal
gave a soft sigh and leaned back, shaking his head slightly. “Surely
you’re not agreeing with your father now, little one. Am I a suspect on
your list as well? Simply because I’m fae and love books?”
“No!”
Lex exclaimed startled, looking up into those eerie fae eyes and
suddenly realized that he’d never replaced the glamour. “Not at all… I
merely meant.. that if you had anything at all… you might be a
potential target…”he said, blushing furiously.
Faal
was quiet for a moment. “I’m sorry.. please forgive me for my
assumption. I should have known better.” He said, his voice soft as he
reached across the table and covered Lex’s hand with his own. “Thank
you for your concern, Lexine. “ he said and gave her fingers a gentle
squeeze. “I mentioned a second library earlier,
I believe… containing my mothers books and some items of personal
interest. I don’t consider these part of my ‘collection’, my collection is
open to anyone who might wish to see or borrow… these books are not. I
consider them quite private. “ he reached across with his other hand
and took Lex’s in both of his as he spoke. “However, I will gladly
share them with you if you wish… I think some of them will have a
personal meaning to you as well…” he added softly. “Why don’t we have our lunch and then I’ll take you to see them?”
Lex
was staring into those eyes again, his hand all warm and tingly where
it lay cupped between Faal’s hands. “ he nodded, smiling shyly. “Thank
you.” He said and Faal smiled, bowing his head slightly before
reluctantly removing his hands. “It will be my pleasure.”
