There
was always a party before the big races. Lex always knew where to look
too. The parking lot behind an old run down warehouse out side of town
was packed, as per usual on a Saturday night race.
He pulled
his sixty five Shelby mustang into a spot and shut the engine off, even
in the car he could hear the collective voices, the music, the
shouting, the partying.
There were some nice cars present
tonight too. He spotted a couple of Nissans, and a jag. He had a
feeling it was going to be a worth while night, and after the way his
week had gone, he was more then willing to indulge.
He pulled
the keys and got out, lingering against the door to light a cigarette.
Per usual, everyone thought he was a devastatingly attractive young
woman. Which most of the time, made the win all the much more amusing.
Guys hated to lose to a girl.
He cast his absinth green eyes
over the party and saw what he was hoping to see. A black 70 Charger
was near by, a group of people around it, and a young man leaning
against the hood with wild black hair, chatting with the group.
Lex took a drag and began shoving his way through the crowd. "Hey! Shane!" He called.
Shane
Li turned from two girls he was flirting with, to see Lex shove his way
through the crowd. "Lexi!" He said with a grin, grabbing the red head's
arm before some of the crowd could shove him away and yanked him clear.
"Ya joinin' us tonight?" The girls, Shane had been flirting with, shot
Lex dark and scathing looks.
"Well I thought about it. Who's
runnin' the race tonight?" Lex asked, taking another drag, before Shane
stole the fag from his fingers and took a drag himself.
"That'd
be Dom." Shane said with a nod, toward a 1967 dark blue GTO. "Ain't
gonna be much of a race with the Shelby though." Shane said, casting an
appraising look toward Lex's mustang where people were inspecting it.
"What, the charger's not up for it?" Lex asked with a smirk.
"She
and I are up for anything you wanna throw at us. I'll see ya at the
finishing line before you get there." Shane said with a smirk, an arm
around Lex's shoulders, handing back his cigarette.
Lex elbowed him in the ribs. "What ever."
"Yo! Dom!" Shane called over the heads of the group snickering and chatting.
Dom
spun around, chatting with an attractive young woman with lime green
hair. She too cast a look in the direction of Shane's yell and her eyes
narrowed. What on EARTH was that boy doing HERE?!
"I take it you know him?" Dom asked glancing at her.
"Yes, I do." Aiyla answered with a frown, before heading in the direction of Shane and Lex. Dom followed.
"Wha's up?" Dom asked with a nod to Shane after shoving his way through.
"We got us another entry." Shane said with a grin, nodding down to Lex.
"Yo, Lex. Wha's up? How's the mustang?" Dom asked with a slight smirk.
Aiyla narrowed her eyes on Lex and planted her hands on her hips. "WHAT are YOU doing HERE, Lexine Mordant?!" She demanded.
"The
mustang's fine." Lex answered, before giving Aiyla a look. "I should be
asking YOU that question, Aiyla." He replied. "Nate know you're here?"
"That has nothing to do with it. I should be asking if Faal knows if you're here!" Aiyla snapped back, giving him a look.
Lex shrugged. "Faal knows I race." He answered.
Shane
leaned against the charger, crossing his arms with a smirk. "I needed a
break and something to take my mind off of things lately." Lex told
Aiyla.
Aiyla rolled her eyes, reached over and smacked Lex upside the head. "You don't need to be here." She snapped.
"Aww,
come on, Ai. Lex has been racin' with us for a long time." Dom said
from beside her. "He's quiet good actually. Only had two or three
accidents."
"Only one that was my fault." Lex agreed finishing off his cigarette. "So am I in or not, Dom?"
"You're
in. We'll be racin' down South End Road. Our guys are seein' to the
fuzz, so." Dom answered. "We got about forty five minutes." People were
already leaving, heading for South End Road.
"How long have you been racing?" Aiyla demanded.
"Little
over a year and a half, since I got the mustang." Lex answered simply,
leaning against the charger next to Shane. "Jimmy introduced me.
Introduced me to Dom who helped me fix up the mustang and got me into
my first race."
"Yeah, that was beautiful." Dom said with a
grin. "First race every, he crosses the finishing line first, the brat
pulled right out in front of me and the other guy who were in first,
nearly caused us to crash, but ya know what they say. Ya see an openin'
take it, cause ya only have one chance."
Aiyla rolled her eyes. "What are you going to do, Aiyla? Tell Nate and Eire? Or Chaos?" Lex asked with a look.
"I just might!" Aiyla snapped. Then sighed. "IF yer gonna do this, Lexine, ya watch yer tail out there." She said with a look.
"I always do." Lex answered seriously. "I don't do this every Saturday night, Aiyla, just once in a while."
Aiyla snorted. "Excuse me, I've got to go place my bet."
She
shoved her way back through the crowd, toward the bookie's section to
place her bet. Nate and Eire were on a stake out job, Aiyla pulled out
her cell phone as she walked, tempted to ring Nate and see if he
couldn't get a hold of Faal to see if he knew rather or not where Lex
was.
She grumbled to herself and shoved her way through the
crowd toward the books. "Hey, Lucky, what's the odds tonight?" She
asked.
Lucky was taking a slip of paper from a runner from Dom
informing him Lex was in and the condition of the mustang. He removed a
pencil from behind his ear, opened his little black book, licked the
end of the pencil and made some notes. "Well...Dom and the GTO are in
top form, clocked them this afternoon at 4.8 a quarter mile, he won the
last three races, odds are 4 to 2, minimum of fifty. Shane and the
charger are looking good, odds 4 to 3 minimum of fifty. Jordan Lee and
his Nissan, I'd say 3 to 2, minimum of twenty. Stanford, 5 to 3 minimum
of twenty. Nepal, 6 to 4 minimum of fifty." Lucky paused, made another
notation then yelled.
"Lex Mordant, 65 Shelby Mustang, top
form, nos out tack. super charger three, clocked 3.8 seconds quarter
mile. Excellent odds, 3 to 5, minimum sixty!" Lucky looked back at
Aiyla with a smirk. "Ya ever seen that foxy redhead race? Damn, smokes
'em. Course, with Dom racin' it'll be tough usually they end up neck to
neck at the flag."
Aiyla shook her head, pulled out a two
fifties from her jean pocket and slapped it on Lucky's book. "Hundred
on Lex." The other people saw that and started putting their money down
as other people came over to make bets before leaving for South End
Road.
Aiyla growled at herself before shoving back through the
crowd to a relatively quiet corner and hit the speed dial on her cell
phone for Nate's number. It wasn't that she didn't trust Lex's driving
skills or didn't have faith in the kid, she'd just seen some one
hanging around that Lex didn't need to be around. Rather he some how
knew Lex was going to be here, or was taking the night off from his
obsession, there’d be trouble if he spotted Lex.
"Ya
haven't been around the seen a while, Lexi. Ya don't usually show up
less you're frustrated with somethin' wha's up?" Shane asked softly
lighting his own cigarette as the crowd moved from the charger, giving
them some peace.
"I am frustrated, its been a shitty week." Lex answered, eyeing the pavement.
"Your guy have somethin' to do with that?" Shane asked taking a drag.
Lex
shook his head, giving Shane a look. "No. Just...stressed I guess. I
had a disastrous conversation with Rue last night. I need to work out
the irritation. "
* He'd heard Lucky's call, now he was
looking. He spotted the white mustang with the original blue racing
strips first and made his way over, running his hand over the hood with
a slight smirk, casting a spell.
It'd definitely be worth seeing Lex burn, might not kill him, but the mustang would be no more.
He
looked about from there and saw Lex with his back to him standing
beside some guy next to a charger and he glared at them. He wondered if
Lex called the guy friend, he hated Lex's friends. they were all a
nuisance.
Rowen turned, back toward his camero, or well, it
used to be Rhy's camero, but he didn't need it any more, being dead and
all. Staring at the call, he cracked a sudden grin, a wicked idea, and
headed toward Dom and the others who put the race together, taking the
pink slip from the car.
"Last calls or room for one more?" He
asked them. They looked over the books, unaware of who Rowen was then
nodded. "We got room for one more, gotta put a least a thou down
though." One guy said.
"I'm a bit hard pressed for cash at the
moment, but." He slapped the pink slip in the guy's hand. "97
anniversary camero, nos out take, super charger four, 4.6 quarter mile.
Shelby engine."
The man cast a look in the direction Rowen
pointed, sent a runner to inspect it, and cast a glance at Dom who
nodded. "South End Road, forty five minutes, place six." Dom said,
taking the slip and handing it to another runner to run to Lucky.
"Right." Rowen answered with a smirk.
"Hope
I'm not too late, little flame." Faal said as he slipped up next to
Lex. "I let someone else drive me.. would've been here ages ago if I’d
driven myself." he smiled over at Shane. "Introductions, love?"
Lex
started but smiled. "I wasn't sure you'd gotten the message I left on
your voice mail earlier. Least now Aiyla doesn't have to go calling
Nate and Eire...or Chaos...And if you'd driven yourself, you'd most
likely be in the race as well." He answered, coming away from the
charger.
Shane was attempting not to snicker to loudly. He was
really found of Lex, the hours they'd spent fixing up the mustang after
Rhy trashed it, and not to mention how they met, in the bar, and it was
just Lex and him who weren't drunk and fighting for their lives almost,
really made them close friends. Shane though Lex was a wonderful, but
rather confused young man. Loyal as hell to.
"This is Shane
Li, a close friend. He helped me fix the mustang after Rhy totaled it.
Shane, this is Faal." Lex said by ways of introductions.
Shane
smiled, and held out his hand. "Nice t' finally meet ya. Lex spent most
of the time while fixing the mustang, talking about you." He said,
grinning at Lex, who blushed, and gave Shane a look.
Faal
chuckled and shook the young man's hand. "He's mentioned you as well.
When I discovered he raced I begged to ride along. I was supposed to be
with him that night, but Rhy interfered in a most unfortunate way.. and
he didn't care to borrow one of my cars. I don't think any of them,
while all fast machine, would be worthy of his mustang, however."
"Yeah,
that mustang's something else, Lex has put a lot of work into it. Hard
to think Rowen, who claimed to like fast cars, hated it so much. But
then I think Rowen hated anything that gave Lex a bit of joy." Shane
said shaking his head. "And you two didn't miss anything special that
night...not besides me beating Dom by a large gap." Shane said with a
grin.
Lex smirked slightly, leaning against Faal. He knew Aiyla would probably becoming back his way after making her bet.
"So
I take it you haven't gotten a chance to see Lex race...shame. Might be
the new one around, but he's really quiet good. Dom likes to think of
him as his protégé but I think he rather surpasses Dom at times." Shane
said with a smirk in Lex's direction, making him blush again. "And then
some of these guys that loose to Lex...rather funny to watch
them...thinking they lost to a girl."
Faal
chuckled. "Yes, a blow to the ego, I'm sure. And while I haven't seen
him race, I did get to experience a short one against Rhy from the
passenger seat. I'm looking forward to the real thing."
Faal
chuckled. "I hope you don't mind my saying this, it's nothing personal
and all, but I'm going to enjoy watching you disappear behind us
tonight."
Shane laughed out right, "Me take it personally, nah. I'm in the for the fun of it, much like Lex. Dom on the other hand..."
"What about me?" Dom re-appeared with a quirked eyebrow.
"We were just discussing how you'd take it personal when Lex leaves you in the dust." Shane said with a smirk.
Dom chuckled and looked at Lex. "Well he can try..."
"Well
I've been able to do it so far, haven't I?" Lex replied with a tone,
that just set both Shane and Dom off laughing again. Lex gave them a
questioning look.
"That’s one of the things we're fond of Lex
about," Shane said to Faal. "He may be small and petite, but his
attitude makes up for his small stature."
"Not to mention the
racers that loose to him and don't know him crack me up when he gets
out of the car at the finishing line. You've got some good bets on you
tonight, Lex. I was just chatting with Lucky, Aiyla put down a hundred
on you alone."
"Well then I'll have to win, wont I?" Lex replied.
"Well we gotta pink slip put down as an entry fee, so ya win, ya may be getting a new car..." Dom added.
"What kind?" Shane inquired.
"97 anniversary camaro...black..." Dom answered. "Not a bad lookin' car. it's seen some races..."
Lex looked up sharply.
Faal
looked thoughtful. "Why does that sound familiar? I've come across that
car not too long ago, I know I.. ah crap... it's not who's I think it
is, is it?" he asked Lex. "It can't be him, he'd dead. Beyond dead.
Someone ... ah crap... it's him, isn't it?"
"Damn it...why tonight?! Can't he just leave me alone?!" Lex muttered.
"Let
me guess..." Shane muttered this shook his head. "You'd best pull out
of the race, Lexi. For your-OW! Half pint, don't do that again!" Shane
growled as Lex slugged him in the shoulder.
"I'm not pulling out of the race!" Lex said flatly, and don't ell me it's 'for my own safety' I HATE those words!"
Faal
pulled Lex back against him. "I believe I'll have to agree with Lex.
He's going to race tonight. He can't allow this...Ravenscourt.. to
interfere with his life. Besides, I'll be with him. I've taken care of
other menaces to Lex... Ravenscourt will be no different."
He
glanced back towards where Lex's car was sitting. "May I suggest you
give the car a thorough going over before the race though... just in
case?"
Shane
sighed, "He's right, Lexi, if you insist on racin' best give the
mustang a once over. Ya know how vindictive I get when my close friends
get hurt." Shane said with a slight smirk.
Lex snorted softly. "Should've left the claws at home, Shane..."
Shane snorted himself. "They go everywhere I go, remember."
"You're
right though..." Lex muttered before turning toward his mustang,
pulling Faal along behind him. Shane tagged along to lend a hand and
they were joined a moment later by Aiyla.
"Well, I see I don't have to make any calls." She said seeing Faal. "Good thing too...' She added with a look at Lex.
Faal
smirked at Aiyla. "I was invited... what's your excuse?" he asked,
trying to keep in a chuckle as Lex dragged him along behind him. He was
rather enjoying this side of Lex. He was definitely going to have to
take Lex out to his garage and turn him loose...
"I don't need an excuse, thank you." Aiyla replied with a roll of her eyes.
Lex snorted. "In other words, Nate hasn't got a bleedin' clue where you're at, does he?"
"Unlike
SOME PEOPLE, who shall remain unnamed, LEXINE, I tend to tell Nate
where I'm going, and he's always welcome to tag along." Aiyla replied,
shoving at Lex.
Lex shoved her back.
"Alright, kids." Shane said stopping them.
Once
they'd gotten to the mustang, Lex pulled open the driver's door and
popped the hood for Shane who wanted to give the engine a once over.
Some how, Lex doubted it would be a physical attack on the car anyway...
Faal
chuckled. "Aiyla.. he DID tell me where he was going... he invited me
along. I suppose you left Nate a note and just assumed he'd think of
joining you ..If he can find you .." he chuckled as he looked at the
two guys going over the car. "Lex... it's not my strong suit, but may
I?" he asked waving a hand at the car. "Rowen is a preternatural after
all...."
'I
did not just leave him a note." Aiyla replied crossing her arms with a
look. Shane was silently snickering as he checked the oil.
Lex nodded to Faal. "Might as well, I have a feeling if Rowen did anything, it wasn't physical..."
Faal
cast Aiyla an amused glance before he turned his attention to the car.
He let his eyes wander over it as he tried to think of how to go about
this.. he'd avoided using his abilities most of his existence in the
mortal realm, and was so out of practice with most of them it was hard
to remember... plus he seemed to just 'wing it' most of the times, and
things generally worked out how he wanted ... generally...
He
remembered a magic detect spell and quickly cast it over the car. The
spell fluttered around the car then collapsed. He muttered a very
un-Faal like word that raised a couple eyebrows. something interfered
with his spell, but just before it had collapsed, he thought he'd seen
a vague reddish glow near the engine..
"My spell collapsed...
but there's something there, I'm sure.. I just caught a glimpse..
around the engine..." He glanced up at Lex. "I can try to recast and
see if I can't get a better idea of what it is... can't do much to get
rid of it unless we know what it is..."
"Hmmm...why am I not surprised." Shane muttered, tapping a finger on the engine block. "Lexi I really do think..."
"I said no." Lex replied, leaning on the driver's door.
Shane
sighed. "Stubborn brat. Alright." He turned slightly and looked about,
before whistling to get some one's attention. "Hey, Carmon, bounce over
here a moment." He called.
A moment later a young woman dressed more scantily then Aiyla appeared. "Ya called Shane hun?"
"Yeah, do a once over on Lex's car could ya?" Shane replied.
"I
was about to ask if someone was castin' spells." She said with a slight
frown, her brow wrinkling. "Some one cast a detection spell," Shane
nodded to Faal, "And some one cast a...oh...tricky, I haven't seen a
bad luck spell that good in a while." She said with a chuckle.
Lex groaned, before sitting side ways on the driver's seat, leaning on his knees.
"Bad luck...yeah, seems exactly the thing Rowen would do..." Aiyla muttered.
Faal
smirked. "Sorry... I know they can be pretty nasty at times, but... I
just didn't expect something so... petty. " He said and ran his fingers
back over his head, then let his fingers grip the back of his neck. "I
mean.. this is Death Spell Ravenscourt we're talking about.... he must
be getting desperate if he's down to luck spells... wonder if he ran
out of witches to do his dirty work.."
"Of
course he's getting desperate." Aiyla said from her place. "Lex's
alluded him for so long now. It's probably driving him crazier, so he's
resorting to dirty tricks."
"Well, it's an easy spell to counter." Carmon said with a gesture.
"And then you can leave him in the dust at the finishing line..." Shane added with a slight smirk.
"Lex
could probably have done that with the spell intact." Faal said with a
smirk and let his arm slip around Lex's waist. He was really looking
forward to riding along with Lex while he raced. From his last drive
with Lex he knew that he became a different person behind the wheel..
the shy, submissive Lex vanished and the more adventurous and bold Lex
came into being.. and Faal loved watching the change come over him..
"Carmon, ya wanna remove the spell, as is we've only got bout twenty minutes to get to South End road." Shane said.
"Sure
thing," Carmon said and set about removing the bad luck spell. Aiyla
waved them and headed off with Dom who was an old friend.
Lex
leaned against Faal, watching Carmon. So this was how Rowen wanted to
play... He imagine Rowen would probably cheat in the race to, he'd just
have to be more cautious then he normally was, and definitely win.
"There you go, all done." Carmon said with a worn smile, looking up. "Better get to South End."
"Thanks
doll." Shane sent her on her way with a light pat to her rear and
turned to Lex and Faal. "See at the start line, Lexi. And keep your
head on."
Lex grinned. "You mean I'll see YOU at the finishing line." He replied.
Faal
chuckled and opened Lex's door for him and waved at him to climb in
before heading around to the passenger's side. He could feel a huge
grin on his face as he buckled in and glanced over at Lex. "Well what
are you waiting for? Show me what you and this thing can do!"
Lex
giggled and started the car, looking over at Faal as he revved the
engine. "Gotta get there first." he replied, glanced back to see the
charger pull out and followed it.
The drive to South End road
was relatively quick. A four mile stretch of deserted road out side of
town, now lined almost the entire way with cars and people. The cars
that were racing were lining up side by side the end. Lex pulled up
between Dom GTO and Shane's Charger and looked at his watch. They had
about ten minutes.
Aiyla appeared at his window and he rolled
it down. "Rowen's at the far end." She nodded with her chin. Lex
restrained himself from looking that way. "you watch your ass, Lexine."
Aiyla said seriously, before glancing at Faal. "Ya know, they usually
don't let passengers in these races..."
"then
I’ll disappear...I can pull an invisible glamour as easily as my
regular one.. but Lex promised I'd could race with him and I'm not
letting that chance slip by." Faal gave her an amused look before
adding. "You're just jealous anyhow... you'd like to ride along with a
certain someone to, no doubt.."
"Excuse me, Dom and I are just friends." Aiyla replied with a look.
"Either
way, you're just mad you can't ride with him, or be behind the wheel
yourself." Lex said, one hand drumming the fingers on the steering
wheel, he could almost feel Rowen looking through the other cars at
him.
Aiyla snorted and patted Lex on the shoulder before
standing straight. "One of these days you'll have to race me, Lexine."
She said with an amused look.
"Any time Aiyla, better move,
they're gettin' ready." Lex said nodding forward as three people stood
in front of the cars chatting a moment, one holding a checkered flag.
Faal
chuckled. "This is fun.. do you think they'd actually ask me to get
out? Should I actually make myself invisible?" he asked Lex, reaching
over and letting his hand lay on Lex's leg for a moment. " Can I ride
along when you race Aiyla... hmm. on second though.. maybe I'll get
behind the wheel as well... if you'll give me a few pointers..."
Lex
glanced away from the three people in front of the car to look at Faal
with a grin. "They're not going to ask you to get out, it's to late
now." He nodded back to the three people. Two of them moved away and
the one with the flag moved to the side, uncurling the flag.
All
the cars on the line revved their engines. Lex glanced over to see
Shane smirking at him, he glanced to the other side to see Dom's smirk.
Before Dom's window and two other cars his gaze met Rowen's who gave
him a devious smirk. Lex shook his head, turning his gaze back to the
stretch of road.
He shifted in the driver's seat, one hand on
the steering wheel, the other on the gear shift. His heart was pounding
and he wondered if Faal could hear it. There was always a rush of
excitement for him when the flag was about to drop. It was one of the
parts of racing that he loved.
He counted out the three count,
watching the flag raising slowly. On three it dropped and Lex slammed
on the gas pedal. The mustang launched forward off the line, between
the charger and the GTO, there was a fire bird slowly creeping up on
the other side of the charger and Lex thought he saw the camero on the
other side. In fact the Camero started creeping forward past the GTO.
Lex
shook his head slightly seeing this. "No, no, you don't..." He muttered
mostly to himself, before double shifting and putting more pressure on
the gas pedal. The mustang shot from between the charger and the GTO
approaching the first mile, and slowly climbing toward 90. That wasn't
the best she could do.
Now the Mustang and Camero were neck to
neck, the camero slowly moving forward away from them. Lex's hand left
the gear shift a minute, slammed the cd into the cd player, while still
watching Rowen and the camero. 'Ballroom Blitz' In the side mirror he
saw the charger coming up close.
Lex's hand went from the cd
player to the first red switch above the radio and he threw it, the
mustang charged forward again, now hitting 110 and started past the
camero. He caught a slight scowl from Rowen and just for the effort,
threw the second switch. That left him with the third and the one in
the glove box. "I hope you remember that switch in the glove
compartment." He said to Faal.
The camero attempted to get
ahead again, but Lex wasn't going to have any bit of that, and jerked
the wheel, sliding into the place before the camero. Rowen had to go
half onto the side of the road, slowing him down as the mustang took
the outer lane and Lex giggled nervously.
Two miles left.
Faal
was in heaven. He was leaning back casually in the seat, a huge grin on
his face. At Lex's words he popped the glove compartment open. "Just
say the word, Lex." He cast a grin towards the re head. "You know, if I
weren't dating you, I'd hire you as my personal driver.."
"Personal driver?!" Lex glanced at him with a slight look of indignation. "I don't play chauffer for just anyone."
He
should have kept his attention on the race, because the camero suddenly
came up on his side and slammed into the side of the mustang. Lex
yelped, grabbing the steering wheel with both hands and jerked hard to
the left to keep the mustang from veering dangerously to right.
He
felt and heard the camero scrap up against the left side and swore,
before flipping the third switch. Out of the corner of his eye he saw
the charger on the other side of the camero, they were all three less
then a mile from the finishing line. When he'd flipped the switch, the
mustang shot forward, starting to leave the other two behind, but the
camero attempted to hit the back side.
"The switch in the
glove compartment, throw it." Lex growled. Once Faal did so, Lex
slammed on the gas, and the mustang hit 140. Lex had never pushed it at
a hundred and forty, he'd never had to before now. He felt rather then
heard the rod being thrown in the engine block, just as the mustang
crossed the finish line. And he was about to stop, when two things
happened at once.
Something black and eerie crossed by his
line of sight in front of the car and Lex simultaneously slammed on the
breaks, while cranking the steering wheel, to avoid hitting it,
throwing the mustang into a 360 degree spin. And as it came to a rest,
the camero slammed hard into the driver's side, the charger slamming
into the back of the camero. The impact, caused Lex to slam his head
against the steering wheel and dash board and he realized as the
darkness of fainting, that this was his third serious crash.
The
driver's side was smashed in badly, and there was either steam or smoke
rolling out from under the hood. Other then the deep laceration on his
forehead and temple and maybe a broken rib, some bruises and minor
cuts, Lex was only unconscious.
Dom and Aiyla appeared, Dom
reaching through the shattered drivers window to shut the engine off,
Aiyla was on the passenger's side, yanking the door open, and looked
close to hysterical. "Oh my God!! Faal are you...Is Lex..." She
couldn't finish a sentence.
Shane yanked open the door of the
camero, practically ripping it open, but Rowen...was gone. The car was
empty, the engine still going. Dom was undoing Lex's seat belt. "You'll
have to pull him out through the passenger side!"
"And FAST!"
Shane yelled, pointing. Dom looked, the gas line had been ruptured and
it WAS smoke, not steam, rolling from under the hood. "Son of a bitch!
The car's on fire!" He was around the passenger's side, moving a
suddenly frozen Aiyla.
Faal
wasn't sure if he was hurt or not.. he couldn't feel anything except
fear for Lex. He already had his arms under Lex's legs and was trying
to get them out from where they were pinned. Dom yanked back on the
wheel as hard as he could and Faal managed to get Lex's legs free and
drag him across the seat, sliding out of the car ahead of him. He
scooped Lex into his arms and stumbled away, calling his powers around
them like a shield as he staggered away from the burning car.
Everyone
staggered away from the two cars and as far away as possible. Shane
joined the others, and as he and Dom turned back to look at the mustang
and camero, the inevitable happened. The explosion was quite intense.
"What happened t' Rowen?" Aiyla asked Shane softly as they watched the two cars burning.
"Wasn't
in the car...must've used a shadow portal." Shane answered, before
shaking his head. "Lex ain't gonna be happy 'bout the mustang."
The
area was clearing fast, racers and observers both knowing to get the
hell out, before the cops showed up. "We'd better get the fuck out of
here." Dom muttered. "Fuzz'll wanna know how it happened, and since
it's rather illegal to be doin' these races 'round here..."
Shane turned to Faal and nodded to his charger. "I'll give you guys a ride. Aiyla, ya wanna come a long?"
Aiyla shook her head. "Nah, Dom's got it covered. I just hope Lex isn't seriously hurt. Are you alright, Faal?
Faal
nodded absently. "Yes, yes.. thank you Aiyla, I'm fine. Just bumps and
bruises I think. A little shaky but I'll be fine. So will Lex, I think
as soon as I can get him out of here."
He waved them off, then carried Lex to Shane's car and between the two of them managed to get him in.
Shane
closed the door and moved around to the driver's side. He paused long
enough to cast the scene of the wreck a look and swear before slipping
into the driver's seat. Dom was right, if the cops came along, they'd
all be in trouble, as it was an illegal race. And now with the burning
wreck of the accident...Shane swore again, starting the charger. In the
distance he could hear the sirens getting closer.
He pulled
away from the scene, turning on to a back road and speeding a long.
"I'm going to go around a long away...better chance of avoiding the
cops. " Shane told Faal, turning onto another back road. "A bit of a
drive, but better safe then sorry, as my dad always says." Once he
dropped Faal and Lex off somewhere safe, he intended to go looking for
Rowen, if anything just to beat the fuck out of him. "Where do you want
me to drop you guys?"
Lex whimpered, starting to come back
around. His head was pounding heavily and he felt light headed. His
right leg also hurt terribly and his side was hurting as well.
"Faal..." He moaned, trying to open his eyes, although he couldn't
quite get anything to work.
"Shh..
stay still, Lex. I'm right here. " Faal said softly, stroking his hair.
"Can you tell me what hurts, love?" his attention was focused solely on
Lex and he didn't even notice where they were going or how fast...
"Oh...just
about everywhere..." Lex moaned. "Head, side, leg...what happened to
the car?!" He finally managed to open his eyes only to have whatever
light hit them shoot a sharp pain through his head.
"Er...well...we
sorta had to leave it back at South End Road." Shane said from the
driver's seat. "It didn't quite make it this time, Lexi."
"What do you mean?!" Lex's voice was slightly hysterical.
"Well it's sort of on fire at the moment...and badly damaged." Shane replied.
"My
mustang!" Lex attempted to sat up more, but got far to dizzy and
lightheaded and ended up falling back against Faal with a moan.
"Sorry, Lexi." Shane said sympathetically.
Faal
cradled Lex against him. "Lex, love. please... stay still. I think you
most likely have a concussion at least, and probably a fracture or
two... Don't worry about the car right now.. I have a garage or two
full, you can have your pick.. Or I’ll buy you anything you'd like... I
heard Steve McQueen was going to sell his..."
Shane
snorted, hearing that. "Now there's a car." He muttered, as he kept his
eyes on the road. He was just turning a corner when something black and
slithery came up along side of the charger on the passenger's side.
Shane barely glimpsed it out of the corner of his eye, but caught sight
of it in the side mirror. "What the fuck..." He muttered, shifting
down, to drop the speed.
The black slithery thing, seemed to
roll around in front of the car. It didn't really have a shape, just a
mass of blackness in the headlights and it seemed to turn to aim
straight at the charger.
"Son of a bitch is using a shadow
assassin." Shane snarled, glancing over his shoulder, before throwing
the charger in reverse, spun the wheel, threw the car in to drive and
kept an eye on the black shapeless thing that was pursuing them.
Lex looked over Faal, out the back window. "That...that thing, that's what darted in front of me!"
"That's what caused you to wreck?" Shane asked.
"Yus!"
"Tricky of Rowen...I'll have to throw in an extra good beating for that." Shane replied with a growl.
Faal
scowled at the thing outside. "I don't remember seeing or sensing
anything before the crash... I'd like to know how he's getting these
things past me... First the spell on the car shattered and now this
thing.. damn..." he muttered suddenly remembering he had Lex's bracelet
in his pocket. He'd retrieved it and the fake earlier that day from the
jewelers and had placed the fake in a fancy little case for Lex... but
he'd never had a chance to get rid of the damned original. There must
be some sort of spell on it in addition to the original curse.
Faal
stroked Lex’s hair gently as he scowled out the window. He had the
feeling as long as he had the damned thing on him, his magic wouldn't
be of much help against Rowen and his tricks... but he couldn't just
get rid of it with Lex right here...
"Shane... I sincerely hope you know how to deal with these things..." he said softly.
"I've
dealt with a couple." Shane answered, as he drove. "Can't do shit with
it until it becomes solid though.” The thing came up on the passenger's
side of the car and almost looked like it was going to try and open the
back door. "Hold on!" Shane said, jerking the wheel hard and turning a
corner at top speed.
Lex watched the thing float past and disappear into the darkness, but he had a feeling it wasn't gone for good yet.
Shane
was ticking off locations in his head where it would be best to get rid
of the damned thing. They needed a good sized area with enough light.
*Think man think!* Faal yelled at himself. *You
know the bastard has the bracelet spelled... that's why you had the
copy made, so he couldn't trace Lex through the damned thing anymore.*
No doubt the bracelet was how the shadow assassin was tracking them...
he just had to think of a way to get rid of the damned bracelet with
out Lex seeing and knowing about the switch; Which was going to be
rather hard to do when Lex was practically sitting on his lap in the
close confines of a car racing along at an extremely high rate of
speed...
"So how does it get solid?!" Lex asked, trying to peer through the windows to see where the shadow went.
Shane
snorted, glancing in the review mirror at Lex with amusement. "It's
gotta get it's claws on ya. It can't kill ya unless it becomes solid.
It's single minded and impossible to destroy until it DOES get solid...Lex, I need somewhere with a lot of light. Quick, my mind's drawing a blank." He said seriously.
"Um...uh..."
Lex closed his eyes, leaning against Faal, he needed to think, but the
pain in his head and leg was causing that to be rather hard. "Where are
we?"
"Country road 456." Shane answered, as they raced around a corner; nothing but country around them.
"The train yard; it's ALWAYS brightly lit and it's only a mile and a half from here." Lex answered, opening his eyes.
Shane
considered the odds, weighting the pros and cons. "Train yard it is."
He answered after a moment, increasing the speed. "Sit tight, Lexi."
Lex
gave a small shaky nervous laugh. "As if I'm going anywhere..." He
muttered, clinging to Faal. The shadow passed on the passenger's side
again, almost slamming into the car.
