The difference between Weres and Shifters is a fine one. The arguements about this are many so we'll stick to the facts as we know them.   Were's are people who were 'infected' by another were. The animal they become depends on the were that infected them. A were cannot be infected by and change into more than one kind of animal. A were's transformation from human to animal tends to destroy clothing and speed the healing of any wounds they may have at the time. Were's have heightened senses, enhanced healing, a rapid metabolism and a stronger immune system. They also tend to be physically fit and not shy about nudity. Were animals are all predator species ; wolves, bears, rats, lions, tigers, etc etc...  A half were MAY inherit the were genes... if so, they'll come into the ability to change with puberty, but it's not guarenteed. A were MUST transform at least once a month and the moon phases do effect them, although it's not as bad as the movies make it out to be. A female were is rarely able to have children due to the trauma of the change.   Shifters are either born with their abilities into a family of shifters, or are cursed/ bespelled into the ability. The animal they become does not nessacerily depend on their parentage, although it usually does. A few shifters have the ability to assume more than one animal form. All shifters have enhanced senses, enhanced healing, a rapid metabolism and a stronger immune system. The easiest way to tell if someone is a shifter or a were is to watch them change... a shifter's clothing shifts with them and is not damaged.  The transformation from and too animal form rapidily increases healing. They are effected by the moons phases, but there's isn't a 'need' to change. A female shifter can choose not to shift shape long enough to bear children, although the confinement to one form does tend to effect their mood and temperment.  this is just the basics of course... more will be added and this will be expanded upon at a later date...
